And then, as they danced around each other, blades and chains grazed against each other's body, his passion and need for bloodshed started to transform into a need for...something. The man's scent made him feel dizzy. His skin started to feel weird, tingling, too tight, too hot despite the cold air. A churning need surged inside him. Death exists as a subject of great concern among many of the general public. It remains a constant, ever-looming threat that every person is terrified of. Diluc, the one almost five years ago — the version of himself that existed before everything changed — would have agreed. He had also been scared of death, at one point.
He is not scared anymore.
But in the end, it doesn’t matter. Whatever Kaeya says or does not say, the outcome will remain the same.
In one week, Diluc Ragnvindr will be dead.

Diluc’s jaw clenches and unclenches and when he meets Kaeya’s eye he’s all fiery determination. “Are you well?” He asks, only the vaguest hesitation cobwebbing the beginning of his speech before he clears through the stiff and the old and his voice rasps out, clearly and concerned. It reminds Kaeya eerily of the Dark Knight Hero's particular brand of awkwardness. Yet Diluc could never be anyone but himself, Kaeya supposes that is truly where their rift stems from, those fundamental differences, and yet here he is asking after Kaeya’s well-being like their years separated are nothing more than a snatch of time and not something that ate and corroded at them.
“Yes.” Kaeya breathes, smiling, a real smile this time. “I can take care of myself, you know, you didn’t need to step in.”
“I did,” Diluc argues.

In which Kaeya is a bit ooc because doesn’t know Diluc is the Dark Knight Hero and they somehow rekindle their brotherly bond one attempted murder at a time.
