    Summary

“Bears don’t eat humans,” Eddie claims, but he does lower his hand. “It’s not even a big bear. We’ve fought bigger things.”

“I've fought bigger things,” Steve grumbles. “And I had my nail bat. You were behind the barricade with the kids, getting the molotovs ready.”

“And that’s why we work so well together,” Eddie beams. “We complement each other.”

“Save your breath,” Steve says. “I’m not wrestling a fucking bear.”

Eddie pouts. Down on the ground, the bear starts tearing into the sandwiches.

    Summary

And that is how, some four weeks later, Eddie finds himself in another city, in another stadium, performing in front of another screaming crowd. Every single place in the stands is packed, just like Chrissy said it would be.

Jesus fucking Christ, he thinks, while a gray-haired dude dressed in a tux and bowtie of all things steps up to the microphone placed at the center of the ring.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” he intones in one of the most sonorous voices Eddie has ever heard in his life. “Fighting out of the red corner, wearing black trunks and weighing one-hundred-seventy-five and a quarter pounds. Originally from the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. His professional record: thirty-three consecutive victories with twenty-eight knock-outs. It’s my pleasure to present the undefeated, undisputed light heavyweight champion of the world: his majesty, the King of the Ring … Steeeeeve Harringtoooooon!”

    Summary

It's a bit strange. For all that Steve loves to test Eddie’s patience when their positions are reversed - always wiggling and whining and pleading at him with those big, wet eyes of his - he has no tolerance for disobedience when he's the one calling the shots, not even on a good day.

And today is not a good day. Today, Steve is pissed.

    Summary

Carver laughs. “You think we came unprepared? Please. My crew is far superior to yours, both in numbers and weapons, and you sailed right into my trap. Now, what do you say? Dead or alive, which one of the two should we make it? My personal preference will probably come unsurprising to you.”

His sword slides free with a metallic whir.

    “Wait!”

Carver freezes, then looks around, face full of confused surprise.

Steve must say the feeling’s mutual, because he doesn’t recall speaking or standing. Still, that was very clearly his own voice just now. And still, here he is, mounting the taffrail of the Hellfire and jumping onto the deck of the other ship. As he walks closer, the confusion in Carver’s eyes morphs into hesitation, and finally recognition.

“Wait a minute,” he mutters. “You’re the Harrington boy. The Governor’s kid.”

    Summary

It's his own fault. He got comfortable. Also probably had one hit of that blunt too many, but that's beside the point.

Just like the frog. The one that you put in a pot of boiling water so it won’t-

No, wait. Cold. You put the frog in cold water, then increase the temperature, so it won’t realize until it’s too late.

That’s exactly what happened. He let Steve in, and he let his guard down, and now he's in Steve’s pool like the frog in the goddamn pot, feeling all the blood drain from his drug-addled pea brain as the man himself dives into the deep end.

    Summary

“I have a proposal for you,” Steve murmurs, idly twisting one of Eddie’s curls around a finger, breath puffing over Eddie’s lips as he leans closer. He smells of rain, and Eddie can see the outlines of his nipples through his soaked shirt. Steve’s eyes follow his, and his lips curl up. “I know you’re not satisfied with our current … arrangement. I know you want more, Eddie. I’m willing to give you more, if the price is right.”

    Summary

The ad for the summer job at the country club promised exciting tasks and plenty of opportunities to learn lessons for life. So far, Eddie has learned three things.

One: White is not his color - especially not if paired with the violent lobster red that his skin turns after twenty minutes in the sun.

Two: Baseball hats make his face look two inches too short - but the stupid thing is part of the uniform, so he hasn’t dared take it off.

And three: Steve Harrington in tennis gear will haunt his dreams for the rest of his life.

    Summary

Eddie Munson is dead. Has been for twelve years. He died on March 27th 1986, in the earthquake that destroyed half of Hawkins.

It was for the best, the FBI told them, if this was the story they all stuck to. It was for the best if nobody knew where they had taken him.

And now he's here, in a crowded subway cart that smells of sweat and beer and vomit, with a ratty guitar case slung over his shoulder and one arm around Steve’s waist.

    Summary

Eddie thought the night guard job at the local zoo was easy money. He didn't expect to encounter homicidal parrots, nosy middle schoolers, greedy hotel tycoons, or being attacked by a beautiful naked dude in search of his magic cloak - and it's only his first week!

    Summary

“My father is dead,” Steve blurts. It feels good to say it out loud. Like some of the weight that has been pressing down on his chest ever since he read the message has lifted.

    Eddie’s eyes go large.

“Oh,” he says. Draws a breath. Shuts his mouth again and wrinkles his brow, one hand coming up to play with his hair. It’s more salt than pepper these days, especially with the low-hanging sun hitting it the way it does. “I’d say good riddance, except I just found you catatonic on the kitchen floor, so I feel I should say condolences instead? Sorry, I’m a little lost here.”

    Summary

“Oh, look at me, I'm Nancy Wheeler,” he says, yanking the cardigan from the chair and draping it over his shoulders, letting the empty sleeves dangle by his sides. “I'm pretty and polite and smart. I study for fun. I've never had to redo a report in my life. I'm gonna pass high school with flying colors and maybe even go to college, and then I'll throw it all away to become a perfect little housewife and raise some airheaded jock’s brats.”

Jeff snorts a laugh. “Oh my God, you do look a bit like her. You should keep that thing, maybe you'll get Harrington fooled.”

Frank raises his book again, doing his best impression of a guy who just wandered in by accident and has never seen these lunatics in his life.

“Maybe on a moonless, cloudy night,” he says. “If we get him drugged and concussed first.”

    Summary

    Steve sings in the shower.

Even though sing isn't quite the right word. It's more of a hum. A slow, wordless melody that Eddie doesn’t recognize, gentle vibrations rumbling from deep in his chest while he works the fingers of one large hand through Eddie’s curls, moving the handheld showerhead with the other. It makes his skull feel weirdly tingly, both inside and out, and between the warm, wet wisps of air wafting through the bathroom, the steady rush of the water, and the rich herbal scent of the shampoo, he's been finding it harder and harder to keep his eyes open.

    Summary

He was imagining screams and shrieks and wails, a sound to make your blood freeze in your veins and your heart go numb with terror. Instead, it's singing.

A low, raspy voice carrying out of the woods behind the house. There aren't any words to the song - none that Steve can make out, at least - and still there's a beauty and sadness to it that makes his heart clench. He assumes it must be one of the neighbors, and it's only when he mentions the song to Nancy and she looks at him like he's crazy, that it slowly starts to dawn on him that what he's hearing is his own lament.

    Summary

    The air smells like rot.

It always does right before it arrives, and something in Steve - something small and childish that was supposed to have died years ago - wants to whimper and curl up under the covers and screw his eyes tight shut. If he can't see it, it won't be able to see him. That's how it goes, right?

Except he's not a child anymore, and he knows better.

    Summary

The thrum of the waiting crowd carries all the way to the green room, twenty-thousand voices all blurring together. They form a hum like that of a buzzing electric current, seeping into Eddie’s blood, mingling with the throbbing pulse of arousal at the base of his spine. He moans, arms shaking where he's bracing his weight on the makeup table. Behind him, Steve chuckles.

“Madison Square Garden,” he rumbles, voice fanning warm over the shell of a flushed ear. He pulls out ever so slightly, grinning against the nape of Eddie’s neck when he whimpers and arches his back to chase after his cock, then places a biting kiss above the tendon of his neck. “Can you believe that? You must be so fucking proud, baby.”

    Summary

    He wants this.

Wants that sizzling pleasure-pain sensation. Wants the hot, liquid wax to seep into his cracks and fill them up, wants the pain and the heat to burn away all that is ugly and disgusting and wrong about him. Wants to be left raw and shivering and clean in the aftermath of it.

Maybe that other, better, cleaner version of himself would find the courage to tell Steve that he wants so much more than this. Maybe that new Eddie wouldn’t be as much of a weakling or as much of a coward. Maybe he would be someone deserving of Steve’s love.

    Summary

It's nothing like what he used to be able to do, nowhere close to the routine that was supposed to win him his third gold medal, but with the empty hall blurring out of focus and the rush of speed in his veins, it's easy to remember. The spotlights shining down on him, bright and hot. The murmur of the crowd in the stands disappearing under the music blasting from the speakers. A hundred cameras gleaming and flashing all around him, every single one trained on him as the world watches him defy gravity, holding its breath as he prepares to leap.
