Summary
The mission was simple. All they needed to do was find the artifact, take it, and slip out before anyone could notice it was missing. Then avoid being traced and hope for the best. Gwing and Rook were here to distract anyone if necessary so that Paddy and Malark could sneak off. The artifact wasn’t in here, so it had to be in the mansion somewhere. Right now they just needed to establish themselves as guests and be as inconspicuous as possible and soon they would be able to go look for the artifact. It was only a matter of time until they could finally get out of this crowd.
"Change of plans," Paddy said, and oh, Malark did not like that tone.

“I never really sleep anymore,” Occtis hears himself saying. He tastes salt on his lips as he speaks, and it tastes how food used to. “I close my eyes and four hours passes in a blink, but I don’t feel rested. I’m surprised by my reflection in mirrors, but I’ve almost stopped flinching from the self I don’t recognize. I’m not hungry but I need to eat, otherwise my mind slows and my body begins to fall apart. What I eat I can barely taste. I can’t decide what I miss the most, the feeling of being rested or the satisfaction that comes from eating a good meal.” Occtis tries to stop speaking, but one more phrase makes it out on the last of his breath. “There’s a hollow place where my heart was, and it’s always cold.”
