He was the bravest, strongest man Thomas knew. So Thomas poured Crozier water and smiled at Crozier’s internal grumblings about Fitzjames and his stories.
Oh, Little thought. I’ve not seen him smile before. There can’t be anything lovelier. He could be the sun on an arctic night. If he ever looked at me like that, I might burn up and be glad for it.
Thomas nearly spilled the water all over Crozier.

Sol looks steadily at Edward as the voice on the other end talks. In the stifling quiet of the shop, Edward swears he can make out the pea-gravel texture of Blanky’s voice on the other end.
“Yeah, your one o’clock is here,” Sol nods. Then he winks! Edward feels himself wince. He’s somehow made it to thirty-nine years of age without being able to distinguish between when he’s being flirted with and when he’s being mocked, and this is a situation where he’s absolutely cursing himself for not knowing the difference.
“Yeah, man, of course. Glad to do it. You want me to just close up after, or… yeah, no. Almost nobody. Ok. See you tomorrow.”
He hangs up, grinning.
“So, the bad news is that Blanky got into a car accident. Just a fender-bender, I guess. Good news is, I get to do you.”
