As they watch a convoy of Absolutists, Tav is injured and left behind. He has no choice but to pose as a devout True Soul in order to survive.
As soon as his gaze settles on Kar'niss for the first time, Tav is fascinated by the drider. He won't admit it to himself, but the curiosity he feels might just contain at least a spark of attraction.
He teams up with the drider to make the journey to Moonrise Towers.

When Shouta’s two hours into his patrol, he hears rustling in a nearby alley. He doesn’t think much of it, until a low, almost silent, muffled whimper emits from the ground. He does a double-take before going down onto the building’s fire escape, and jumping onto the ground.
He slowly approaches the noise as the whimpers turn into choked sobs.
The first thing he notices is long, dark, wet purple hair. The second thing is—
…their arms are bound together with duct tape, and so are their legs, and then he sees the outline of something covering the lower half of their face.
As he inches closer, he realizes exactly what that thing is.
