Summary
Willow shakes with rage. That’s not fair! It’s not Hunter’s fault he can’t do magic and he isn’t any weaker for it! Her fury threatens to climb out of her chest in the form of the vines she can feel weaving a path under the school. Her magic slips into their roots so easily, calling forth sharp thorns that slice through the earth and stone beneath them. She could take Bosha down easily, make it so she doesn’t play another game of grudgby for the rest of the season.
Still, she forces herself to breathe in for four, out for four, and again. Let Hunter handle it for now. She can kick Boscha’s butt for this some other time.
Just stay calm.
Stay calm.
She collects herself and resigns herself to glare at the bully from her friend’s side.
And then Boscha delivers the killing blow. “Hah! Figures! Of course half-a-witch-Willow would find another half-a-witch to befriend.”
Hunter flinches hard.
He stumbles back, eyes wide.
And Willow.

He parted the grass to either side of him, revealing a bloody snare trap and a collection of sporadic tracks stamped hastily into the ground.
“The creature that we’re looking for…” Hunter began, turning to look at his uncle, “It escaped a snare?”
Belos’ mask warped the light from the brightening sky as it steadily nodded up and down.
“It did.”
“What kind of beast is it?”
At that, Belos hummed out a laugh and placed a gold-plated hand on the crown of Hunter’s head.
“Do you truly expect me to ruin the surprise?”
Belos takes a young Hunter on his very first hunting trip.

More specifically: Hunter and what it means to be a ‘grimwalker’ in this au I’ve decided to make. Featuring non-canon lore, bard magic, astronomy, angst and comfort, as well as likely projection on my part. Oh! As well as Winged!Hunter because it’s cool and why not, though it may not happen for a bit.[This is my first ever fanfiction and probably more than a bit ambitious on my part, but my perfectionist heart won’t allow me to half-ass this, so buckle in as I do my best to tell this story.]

Being dragged into the ground isn’t a pleasant experience. Finding out that you’re an artificial being instead of a real person is an even less pleasant experience. Unfortunately, those were things that Hunter had to face, though there was no way he would ever fully accept it. He doesn’t want to end up like the others, all of the Golden Guards, the grimwalkers who lived before him and all died at Belos’s hand. He’s making it his mission to survive long past the Day of Unity, whether it’s to spite his creator, or to stay alive for those who care about him. No matter what, though, Hunter’s on a mission. And he won’t back down.

Luz and Hunter end up in a rather dangerous situation, and have to learn to trust each other (and not rip out one another’s throats) in order to get through it.
