Everyone in a certain part of the city knows that if you want something - an object, a person, a legal document, a mystery solved or an obstacle removed - you go to him. He’s smart and fast and not afraid to get his hands dirty, and today he doesn’t have his hulking ogre of a boxer bodyguard with him. Probably he wants to go unnoticed… and he walked right into the tea shop, where the Lan guy is sitting.

Lan Qiren allows himself one more indulgent moment of distraction with a sip of his tea, whose quality demands a moment of appreciation. After that, though, there’s no other way to avoid what must be done.
“They — we — must ask our Sect Leader to thoughtfully consider the issue of a marriage from which a Sect heir may be produced.”
Lan Xichen goes very, very still, and Lan Qiren’s heart aches for him.
“…Marriage.”
“You are of marriageable age, Xichen,” Lan Qiren reminds his nephew. “It is not an unreasonable concern. You must have an heir.”

Jiang Cheng sighs. There’s a deep ache in his chest, hooked up under his ribs and squeezing around his heart, that he knows without examining too hard is the familiar feeling of being alone; ridiculous to feel it when surrounded by people, he knows, but… this was supposed to be a family visit, it was supposed to be a week with his sister and brother in their family home, and then Yanli had wanted the kids to be there, which was fair, and wanted Zixuan to be there too which was… fine, and then Wei Wuxian had whined that if the Peacock got to be there, could his beloved Lan Zhan stick around too? And Jiang Cheng had wanted to tell him exactly where his beloved Lan Zhan could bloody well stick it, but that wasn’t really fair, and Wei Wuxian is such a fucking brat nowadays without Lan Wangji glued to his hip that Jiang Cheng had caved. So their family time together that was supposed to be just them and maybe the kids, now included plus-ones, and also, inexplicably, Nie Huaisang.

In front of him stands Meng Yao.
Meng-fushi, specifically, his glossy hair pulled back in Nie braids denoting his rank, and his hands smoothing down his pale purple robes, accented with brown stripes and a subtle geometric pattern that marks them as Nie, as he twists to admire them in Nie Mingjue’s mirror. Meng-fushi had cinched the thick robes tight around his waist with a brown leather belt, but he’d taken that with him when he’d left Qinghe, so today Jin Guangyao has made do with just a light sash.

Jin Guangyao, already half-standing to go begin reorganizing the next few courses to account for fewer guests, could only nod and do his level best to ignore the warmth of pleasure and desire curling up together in the pit of his stomach.
Saying yes to such a simple request had made Nie Mingjue happy — visibly, demonstrably happy. He’d smiled up at him as he’d left, small but definitely there, and now Jin Guangyao feels like his face is going to get stuck in his own happy little smile that he isn’t interested in stifling.

The touch at least seems to bring Lan Xichen back to himself and he sucks in a sharp gasp, eyes wide though he at least doesn’t try to step away and stand under his own power just yet. “You told him you love him?!”
“Yes, what’s the problem?!”
“What’s the– what’s the problem?!” Lan Xichen repeats, though with quite a bit more incredulity than Nie Mingjue had used. He finally lets go of his sleeve to step back and begin pacing, an anxious gesture he’s not sure he’s ever seen Lan Xichen unbend enough to allow himself, and especially not at such a brisk clip. “What’s the problem, he says, honestly,” he mutters to himself and Nie Mingjue gets the sense that somehow, somewhere, he might have maybe fucked up a little.

They enter, and she gets them settled around the tea table. Jiang Cheng is so full of tension she fears that one wrong movement will make him snap. His brow is heavily furrowed in a furious scowl, but she knows her brother, and underneath the scowl she can see genuine fear. He wants to know the truth, but he is afraid of what Wei Wuxian might say.
Wei Wuxian has totally disappeared inside of himself, silent and vacant-eyed, also clearly full of fear. Neither of them want this conversation, but now that the scar has been witnessed, they both know there is no going back until the whole truth has been revealed. They cannot just pretend that they do not know.
It’s inevitable, in a terrible way. Perhaps it always was.

Summary
Xichen looks at his sworn brothers lying across the room. They seem so quiet. So still. He can barely believe what Wei Wuxian is saying. The rest of the world fades out as he stares.
“So what can be done?” he whispers.
“As far as I can see, we have two choices. Choice one: we destroy them completely. It would be difficult, but I think it could be done. But… it would be destroying them completely. It would mean shattering their souls.”
Xichen doesn’t feel the floor as he drops to his knees; it is just that one moment he is standing, and the next he is not. He isn’t even seeing them anymore, his eyes have unfocused, and yet they are all he can see.
Could he do it? Could he shatter their souls - destroy their very essence, prevent them from ever reincarnating, ever getting an opportunity to find peace - truly and utterly severing their link to this world and making fully certain that Xichen will never meet them again - all for the sake of the greater good?

Summary
They walk the rest of the way in pleasant silence; with the view out over the sprawling city of Lanling from Koi Tower, and the way the sunset paints the flowers and glinting gold buildings in soft pastel hues, and the sweet looks A-Yao keeps flashing him from under his eyelashes, it ought to be a perfect evening, and yet-
Probably, it is just residual discomfort, but the deeper they walk into Koi Tower, the more he can feel his spiritual senses… twinging is the best description, like he’s walking on a sprained ankle. With all the beauty and warmth around him, having this strange but insistent pulsing of unease feels like listening to music played on a guqin with one single string out of tune. It doesn’t help that the whole place seems oddly deserted - corridors he has seen previously ringing with the footsteps of servants are conspicuously silent, side rooms usually full of cheerful bustle absent of guests.
He can’t bear the idea of ruining this long-awaited reunion, though, so he pushes down the unpleasantness, down and down, and when A-Yao knocks on the door of a guest suite, and da-ge answers it, smile already blooming on his face - well. It’s easy to ignore. It's probably nothing.

Jiang Yanli has a hand on Jiang Wanyin's arm now, shaking her head and asking quiet questions that Huaisang can only partly make out. Other disciples are responding, and it must have got out that he wasn’t at practice because Meng Yao is making That Face - a reserved Oh Dear Young Master, This Humble One Is Disappointed Once Again that is covering for a You Little Shit that is only seen behind closed doors - so Huaisang knows he’s going to be in trouble later. The branches aren’t as comfortable as they were a second ago, so he might just slide down and head straight to the lunch hall, where the Lan rules will stall any yelling right up until the point where someone tells Lan Qiren. All bets are off then.
Jiang Wanyin might just beat Lan Qiren to it, even if he doesn’t know Huaisang is around to hear him. He looks livid. Huaisang is just getting his hands and feet moving to begin his descent when Jiang Wanyin’s molton gaze sweeps the diplomacy students, razes the pavilions, and then locks on to Huaisang and begins to burn through his skull.

Guangyao said if they get out alive, don’t tell Xichen.
He doesn’t believe they’ll make it. Guangyao is legitimately concerned that they might be trapped and die before they can escape. Probably, that’s why he’s allowed so much emotion to slip through his usual mask in the last few hours: if they die, who’s to find out that anything besides banal pleasantry exists inside his vicious trap of a mind?
Well, Mingjue knows. He’s always known. And by gods, they are going to make it out of this, even if it’s just to increase that chances of him one day getting the opportunity to punch Jin Guangshan in his stupid, smug, smarmy face. Nothing as pathetic as certain death is going to get in the way of him getting that satisfaction.
