It’s not his blood but after wiping his face and blinking the sickening hot red out of his eyes, he wishes it was. There’s a woman lying dead before him, purple hands uncurled and limp with a baby lying on her naked chest.
The cold horror in his chest settles into something more painful when he sees the tiny blood-colored lump but then the baby stirs, kicks, and Lance can breathe again. Thank god, he prays. He was taught to use the cycles of the moon, the days of the solstices, and the minerals from the Earth to cast spells. He was taught, from a young age, that Magic, while ever changing, is also grounded in tradition.
When his mother is killed in an attack on Watford, the blame is placed on the Ancient magic she called upon for protection and power. Since then, the Old Ways were seen as Dark, Evil, and far too dangerous and obscure for modernity. With the death of Natasha Pitch, came the death of Ancient Magic.
But Baz Pitch is his mother's son, and while he has to hide his Dark knowledge to the other magicians, he knows it won't be forever. He was taught well, and when the moment comes, he will take back his mother's legacy.
And no one (especially not the Mage's puppet, Simon Snow) will stand in his way.

Sometimes, I catch glimpses. They make my brain squeeze and squirm—like my grey matter has been turned to needles. Internal wounds, all memories and blood.
It hurts every time.
I know I had him—whoever he was—erased. I know what it means. At some point, I wanted him gone. Wanted him gone so badly that I was willing to let them wipe everything and leave the slate clean.
There’s no record of an erasure not sticking. No reports of memories ever coming back. Believe me, I’ve checked.
But maybe…maybe some people aren’t meant to be forgotten.
