Her fantasy obsession wasn’t the only thing that marked out Luz as different. Other kids didn’t put spiders into their art projects, other kids also didn't have fangs that barely fit in their mouth. Other kids had white eyes, sclera unstained by pitch and amber. Other kids got sick sometimes. Other kids didn’t have purple hair, or purple blood.

Everyone could tell Luz had changed after she went missing for three days at the age of 5. At first she was just quieter, and had developed strange quirks, like a fear of tattoos.
But then she started drawing some strange images, claiming to be things she saw during her time missing. After that was when the real changes began. She developed inhuman instincts, her eyes changed drastically, fangs grew in when she lost her baby teeth, she grew bone like claws that replaced her fingers.
One day, by pure chance, she returned to the place she disappeared to all those years ago. One day, by pure chance, she returned to the boiling isles. One day, by pure chance, she changed the course of history.

Summary
Hunter has spent most of his life in a cage. He's adopted siblings with Luz and Vee, both basilisks like him. Though being held in separate cages, of course, he couldn't comfort them after the training, or curl up for warmth when there was a chill. It itched and burned, like his scales being rubbed raw by sand. They would get out. No matter what.
