Summary
The tornado tore through the convoy of the Long Walk like a machete through a stack of old wet newspapers. Tanks ruptured, disgorging wailing soldiers up to the maelstrom–-some even fired their carbines into the gale, as if that was going to fucking do anything.
The road itself, which had been a living thing to those who walked, was torn up by its filthy dark creosote roots–-was slurped, was sluffed, was devoured upwards into that abyssal maw.

The last seven Walkers survive and end up at a sinister farm in rural Maine. A fairytale of sorts.

“I wonder what ol’ Barky’s doing right about now,” Stebbins said. His cigarette bobbed on his shiny lip. The part of the cut near his lip had opened again. It bled sluggishly down his chin. He wiped it away.
“I don’t,” Ray said shortly.
“Bet you he’s ecstatic,” Pete said. “He’s dancing with the devil.”
Stebbins laughed, a small, throaty chuckle.
“He never did mention what kind of dance he’d do, huh.”
“Square dance,” Pete joked. “Gotta be a square dance.”
“Maybe a slow waltz,” Stebbins suggested, fluttering his hands. “Nice and romantic.”
Ray curled his lip in disgust and stared out the window. A bunch of dainty dandelions swayed in the wind, their white heads like downy chicken feathers.

Suddenly, it felt less important to know how many miles there were to Freeport than to watch this— the way Garraty turned his face towards McVries’ neck, for just a moment, to breathe. Like when his Ma said to keep eyes on the pulpit during service. Not for his own personal good, no. But just so that someone saw it; so it was affirmed in that sense, whatever it was Garraty and McVries had.

First, there was a moment in silence.
In Pete’s swaying peripheral vision, boys drifted, not nearly as many boys as when they last saw light, but, Ray was there, pressed up against Pete’s side and that was all that truly mattered.
Shadowed by the looming figure of the major, stood, stately, atop a sputtering vehicle, in the pale glow of early morning, all of them trudged together, towards their graves, children ardent for some desperate glory.
But then, there was a moment of noise.
And in less than the amount of time it would take to buy a ticket, everything changes.
Or: On the second morning of the long walk all broadcasts are abruptly cut due to 'outside interference', there is still a long way to walk to reach potential safety (Garraty's mom's place) but with the competition dismantled an opportunity to look out for each other arises and friendship takes precedence.
