Of course, Hana had finally settled down in her carrier, and she continued to sleep despite the crash of a half dozen cans of baby formula hitting the carpet, so Joe merely blinked back unshed tears and took a deep breath, finding his key and unlocking his flat. He left the door ajar as he carefully put Hana’s carrier on the sofa and quickly went back to retrieve the scattered cans.
After the tragic passing of his omega sibling, alpha Joe got custody of his newborn niece. Unfortunately, things weren’t progressing as well as they should and now Joe has found himself in dire need of a wet nurse.

Joe doesn't say anything, because he can't think of anything that wouldn't make his heart pound faster than it already is. Nicky side eyes him for a moment, because of course he can tell, but he's been working on politeness recently, so he doesn't ask why. He just gently turns his own hand over and laces his fingers through Joe's. He squeezes gently, and yeah, Joe knows better than anyone that Nicky doesn't have the ability to feel things. He's been inside his head as literally as is possible, has repaired him, has seen his circuitry and its beautiful, unprecedented intricacy. He knows exactly what it's capable of, what Nicky is, and what he isn't.
Still, the entire point of what they do is to discover the unknown. Maybe Joe doesn't know the why of it, hasn't figured out the how, but the way Nicky cares about things, about doing and being good, about the work they do, about his friends, about Joe- if it isn't empathy, pure and sweet, Joe doesn't know what else it could possibly be.
Or: Nicky is an android, Joe is an engineer, they are in love, and this is the Star Trek AU that nobody asked for.

His lovely, blonde-brown hair looks in need of a haircut since it's growing out somewhat unevenly, presently just long enough to hang partially in his eyes. His eyes are the most intriguing shade between clear blue and crisp green. He has a beauty mark near his mouth, a definitely Roman-looking nose, and enough scruff on his chin that Joe's not sure if he's trying to grow out his beard or just hasn't bothered to shave.
He's fucking gorgeous, is what Joe is trying to say.
(The past year hasn't been kind to Joe or Nicky. But a chance meeting at a local market sets them both on a path they weren't expecting. A path filled with love, magic and maybe, just maybe, some peace.)
