Summary

The house is dark, a blue-gray glow filtering in the windows, like the light before dawn. The kitchen stands empty, endless. It reminds Red of the day they learned about electricity, from that tiny, robot girl that had leapt from the box on the wall. Once again, the room is nearly pitch black, as if he were living through a repeat of that day. The one with batteries and teachers, dead and alive. A day haunted by green eyes and quiet confessions. The checkered linoleum stretches on and on, boundless, passing far beyond the point that Red could see.

“Do. I. Have. A. Birthday?” He repeats, slowly, like he was speaking to a person he considered to be very simple.
“I, uh, I guess?” the red one replies, glancing at the shortest for help. Met only with shrug he continues on, face puckered in confusion. “I mean you kind of…have to have one. If you’re alive. So, yeah, I think you must have a birthday.”

400 years after the events of ACOC, Lapin still wanders Calorum. Candia has long fallen and the Rocks are lost to time, but he isn't the only immortal haunting the wastes. It might have been a unique opportunity for comradeship, had it happened to be literally anyone else.
Not that Keradin is particularly thrilled about it either, but they'll make do.

One Hermit, however, can recall his past in immense detail and would really appreciate it if he could be one of the ones that forgets it at some point. Unfortunately, with the way life has kicked him down over and over again, it wasn't going to let him off that easily.

In which Mumbo crosses several towns, learns some creative methods of self-defense, fights some monsters, sees things no human is meant to have seen, befriends a stranger, steals multiple cars, has inconvenient moral scruples, grows increasingly terrified of his own culpability in the apocalypse, grows a spine, blows up at least one building, accidentally prevents a murder, and attempts to find his best friend in the futile but ever-burning hope the man’s still alive.
He has to say, he’s so exhausted and terrified that he thinks he might just be mad?
(OR: the one where, after most of humanity turns into a series of terrifying monsters, Mumbo decides he’s going to risk his life on an apocalypse road trip to try to find out if Grian is alive. Things, as you might imagine, devolve from there.)

With the Hargreeves returned to their original timeline with Five still trapped in a teenage body and no legal guardians or place to call home, it’s not long before the state’s involvement and a couple of court cases before his placement into the foster system.
It isn’t like it really matters anyway. Five can spatial jump and travel through time. A pesky foster family that aren’t particularly nice aren’t ever getting in the way.
But when the lives of his siblings are endangered yet again by an unknown source full of blackmailing threats, Five realises he’s run out of options.
So he does what he’s asked. He avoids his siblings, stays put in his temporary home, and does everything in his power to keep them safe. Besides, it’s not as if they have to know, right?
Then he kills his foster father.
And things start to get very, very complicated.
