She gathered that cold hard ball of feeling in her chest from the end of last season and drawn out of it the most vicious things he could say to her, prepared her responses, inoculated herself to the hurt. Only here she is, ready for it, and is met with his eyes, the same as ever, open and intent and soft.
“Pen,” he says, gentling his voice. “Sit down.”

“It is well done and I would imagine expensive. It is silver with some curlicues of gold along the band. The centrepiece is a large pearl instead of a stone, but it is perfection. There are initials etched inside. P and C. I have not heard you speak of any C except your friend Mr. Bridgerton.”
