Dean’s sitting at the kitchen table with Sam when his phone rings. Jody’s name flashes across the screen and he considers not picking up, but Sam’s there, and he’d start asking questions if he left the call alone. It’s not like Dean doesn’t want to talk to Jody, it's just that he can’t bear talking to anyone these days.
“Hi, Jody,” Sam says.
“Howdy, boys.” She greets them and begins talking about a case she’s asking them to take over. Dean doubts they will, Sam hasn’t let him pick up a gun or knife in months, not since their last hunt.
Jody’s voice cuts through the phone. “Alright, if you boys don’t wanna take the case, I’ll see if Castiel will, but I think he’s helping Claire in Colorado–”
Dean doesn’t hear a damn thing after that, and by the looks of it, Sam doesn’t either. For the first time in days, Dean opens his mouth and speaks. “Cas is alive?”
Jody’s voice is quiet on the other end. “He didn’t tell you?”
Cas is alive, and Dean is figuring out what he should do about that when they learn Cas's accidental jailbreak broke The Empty, letting out most of its occupants. Now that every villain they have ever fought is back, Team Free Will 3.0 has their work cut out for them.

What happens after Cas is taken from him isn’t fast at all.
It waits. It meanders. It builds itself brick by brick, stretching over Dean’s resistance and growing in his garden like a slow-curling vine. It’s a feeling that spawns off a thousand moments, a thousand firsts, until Dean looks around and his whole world is green and brilliant, radiant blues.
It doesn’t start that way. It starts with black.

Dean won't let Cas die that easily.
After a knee-jerk, slightly reckless rescue mission, Dean finds himself without aim and without conflict for perhaps the first time in his life. Is it possible for him- for them- to grow after all this time?
And of course, in the centre of it all (hasn't he always been?) is Cas. Maybe the after wouldn't be so bad with him.

Castiel knew what most of the universe thought of him. The awkward nerdy angel. The virgin. The naive childlike human who needed to be rescued and coddled. Most people never knew how much that infuriated him. But, as Castiel accepted life as a hunter, he still took all the same teasing from Dean and Sam. And a witch case was the one that made his temper snap. A drunken fistfight with Dean suddenly went down a road Castiel never knew he needed so much.

Dean’s injuries are too severe and there’s only one person who can truly help him. But Castiel doesn’t answer their prayers. Not after the fight he and Dean had before Dean left with Ketch. When Cas does come back, he heals Dean, but then decides to teach him a lesson. And he intends to make sure Dean understands it this time.

Unfortunately for Sam they break their promise and don't hold back their advances for each other.
