Summary
Pete had been by his side the entire time. Not a day had he abandoned him. He slept on the couch in his room, ate sitting on his huge bed, resting head on his shoulder as he watched silly TV shows. When Vegas had tried to let him go, to make him understand that he wouldn't have an easy life being by his side, Pete had simply flashed his most sincere and radiant smile telling him that he didn't want to leave, indeed that he couldn't because his feelings for him they were too many and too strong. Vegas was completely filled with an absolute sense of happiness. Relief. Knowing that the person you love reciprocates is the most pleasant feeling in the world. Horror. Because he felt that every fiber of his body was now devoted to Pete and that he should protect him from anything that could hurt him. Even if that meant taking him away from himself.

Pete was jolted out of his thoughts by Vegas' matter-of-fact tone. His eyes snapped back to the other and he could see that his back was now straightened up, yet his head remained directed down at the floor.
Except Pete knew that it wasn’t the floor he was looking at, but at the dead animal that Vegas held in his own two hands.

Vegas ignores this, focusing on Pete instead. Volkonov turns to look back at a man who is fast approaching the three of them, someone who was one of the men he first arrived with.
“Khun Vegas,” the new man says in clipped English — Chinese crime syndicate Pete wagers — as he looks between Vegas and Volkonov. “We didn’t realize you were coming tonight.”
“Clearly,” Vegas says with an icy edge. He absentmindedly runs his thumb along the slope of Pete’s cheekbone before tugging on Pete’s bottom lip. Something about the touch burns Pete while also grinding all of his rotating thoughts to a dead halt.
