Summary
Because his dad tells him to take time away from everything, Stiles goes on a roadtrip after the final confrontation with Gerard Argent. He has a lot of shit to work through, from trauma all the way back to his childhood that he never told a soul about to just generally himself. He needs distance from Beacon Hills and his friends, so he listens to his dad, leaves town and goes on an adventure.
It’s really no wonder that trouble finds him; he’s Stiles fucking Stilinski, after all, but while the Winchesters and their resident angel might be dickheads about ninety-nine percent of the time, that one percent really pays off once he and Dean get past the whole 'Hey, you’re a lot like me and me no likey that'-thing.
Really. He’s weighed it out thoroughly and come to the conclusion that it’s worth it. On one hand, hunting trips and getting into trouble with literal demons and meeting an angel called Cas kind of isn’t what he imagined for his emancipating summer road trip – on the other, maybe it's exactly what he needs.

“Sam,” Castiel quietly starts, tone careful. “I’m not sure how to less boldly ask, but...is there any chance that Dean may have been avoiding short sleeves for other reasons?”.
Okay, now Dean is ready to intervene. Like, ASAP.
He plasters on a content grin and tries to pretend as if his very bones aren’t rattling from fear, marching in with an unexpectedly rough, “Mornin’,” as he makes his way into the kitchen—thoroughly interrupting Sam’s apprehensive, “What do you mean ‘other reasons’?”.

One year to get himself pulled together, to stop spiraling into panic attacks, to stop falling into pits of despair, to stop screaming himself awake every night. One year to learn everything he could about his spark, about hunting, about the supernatural. One year so that when he went back maybe, just maybe, he could do more good than harm.
