"What do you wait for?"
It's a question Leigh gets asked, over and over and over again. Seasons come and go, the people around him growing older—settling down, starting families, making homes. A close friend gets married; Leigh is chosen as their wreathholder, their vowsmith. He bears witness to the couple's union all smiles and good cheer, regaling their guests with stories of times past.
A number of people ask after him. The little old lady two streets away who runs a forgey Leigh frequents. The mischievous elven librarian, who he'd befriended upon his very first visit to the sprawling oakwood reserve. Even the messenger boys who make their rounds daily have made a game out of it.

Summary
Gil wakes up to an empty bed and a bouquet of apple blossoms on the nightstand.
For a beat, they lie in bed and let their gaze track on the flowers. Most are still-nascent buds; it’s just past the first of March, and apple trees really only start blooming once springtime hits. Still, a decent amount has flowered—enough that they won’t give their knucklehead of a not-actually husband a tonguelashing for being shortchanged.
They will, however, chew him out for being the most stubborn, prideful person in existence.

Gil is looking at him with a sort of expectant gaze. The kind they used to wear whenever they’d pull off some crazy combat maneuver, the one that screams look at me, gaze upon what I’ve done, praise me.
Yuuto answers their stare with the same intensity. I’m looking, I’m always looking, I’m here.
It’s like—like a painting. The dramatic ones that nobles like to commission and hang above their fireplaces. Dawn breaks. A veil of shimmering rose-gold daylight washes over Gil’s face, and with them this close to each other, Yuuto can make out flecks of sunlight in their honey-brown eyes.
Under the sun’s gentle probing, life stirs. A birdsong soars through the air, a melodic warbling that is soon joined by a number of other cries.
Gil, Yuuto, and a happily-ever-after.

Tear, singular, because after one slipped it felt like his body shut off. Not a single sound leaves his lips. He goes quiet. Always quiet. Quiet is good, because quiet means not being noticed, not being seen. His lips feel numb. It’s like someone’s taken a needle to his mouth and sewn his jaw shut.

It’s a clear night: the dense fog which had enshrouded the earth during the day had crept away at sunset, leaving behind a view practically unparalleled. Stars blanket the vast onyx sky, forming a magnificent celestial atlas that perfectly frames the recently-risen full moon.
Beams of moonlight dance and scatter across the ocean. As each wave breaks across the sand, Jesse almost swears he catches a glimpse of divine light; the water shimmers cerulean before fading into its usual murky hue.
