Summary
Moonlight made pools of yellow on the marble. What was this place? And the man he caught a glimpse of, the first night this place opened up to him, from between the windows that could have been doors. That was his Stranger from the Tavern of the White Horse, almost a century ago, Hob was sure of it.
Hob had come to suspect that on that otherwise ordinary summer evening, he had embraced immortality and perhaps, given up his soul with perfect happiness. What a fable that would be.
November, 1475. Hob Gadling arrives in Venice, explores a mysterious world of cosmic grandeur, trades ink-stained love confessions with his stranger, and embraces the most important lesson of all: that life is a story all on its own, past and present and an ending that isn't really an ending at all

“Yes of course. The floor is yours, professor – ” the beautiful young man – Hob gave himself a kick mentally; he really needed to stop thinking about a student this way – paused in his reply in order to reach across the table for a copy of the syllabus, scanning it quickly. “Professor Gadling.”
Hob felt his insides go a little bit liquid at the sound of his own name; his ability to focus crumbling into dust. This seminar was very much not going the way he’d imagined.

Letting me – teaching me something that was very much not on any curriculum, as if I’m someone who had never, you know… So,” Dream’s voice trailed off. “That’s it, really. Bone-crushingly embarrassing, I know.”

“Is it dangerous, this task of yours?” Johanna asked, her gaze fixed on Morpheus. The glint in her eyes was not from fear or trepidation, Hob noted with mild interest. He had seen this look before, on the face of young sailors and fellow bandits in the forest. She was hungry for something. As for what that was, he could not hazard a guess.
Morpheus looked grave, his mouth pressed into a thin frown. The fingers of his right hand made a twitching movement, as if he wanted to reach out to Hob but decided against it. “Yes,” he said after a moment. “Extremely so.”
(Or - Morpheus invites Hob alongside Lady Johanna to undertake a task in which he cannot involve himself directly - a family affair. Whether or not they succeed admirably will be a matter of perspective.)
A story of pushing boundaries; of learning to die and choosing to live; of finding out if love is stronger and more enduring than fear.

In order to perfect humanity’s own dark mirror, one needs not look for evil or greed. In the true heart of darkness lies a sort of ambiguity. Hob taught him that.
(Or - Dream indulges his selfishness, learns a few lessons, and creates his masterpiece. A moral treatise of dubious legitimacy, but nonetheless, a love story).

“Yes,” Hob answered without hesitation. He did not know the name of the man next to him, or where their next destinations may be. Yet he knew, deep in his heart in a space beyond instinct and faith, that he would follow his stranger anywhere. “Yes, I do.” he declared, breathing reverence into his consent.
