Peter doesn't die. Instead, he finds himself sling-shot back in time by the Archivist's machinations, to a time before everything he's ever called home.
A man out of his time catches a lot of attention and Peter is simply not equipped to deal with all of that.
Somewhere, in this London of horses and top hats, there must be a set of eyes capable of seeing a way out of this for him. Only issue being those eyes are still very much where they are supposed to be, and Peter has to meet his husband again.

“As lovely as it is to meet you, I’m afraid I can’t stay, I have a work thing.” Peter paused, he locked eyes with Mrs Bouchard and stated with all seriousness: “My ship tragically sunk in my absence.”
If Elias wasn’t so focused on restraining the urge to strangle Peter he might have marvelled at how quickly tears threatened to burst out of the corners of his ‘mother’s’ eyes. “Oh, that’s absolutely awful.” She whispered horror-struck.
Elias gently grabbed at Peter’s shoulders in a poor facsimile of a hug but given Peter’s height difference it looked more like Elias was trying to drag him down to the ground. “Yes, it was terrible. That’s why Peter is spending time with me, to take his mind off that horrible business.” Elias’s smile promised excruciating torture if Peter did anything but nod his head in acquiescence.
In which hunting a Leitner leads to Elias and Peter attending the Bouchard Family's Christmas dinner.

It's not fun of course, but it's better than the alternative, and Janus has long ago learned to handle it without any problems.
The actual problem comes when Virgil finds out.

The walls were cream in color and littered with photographs of people and colorful artworks, both of which were currently blurry to him, and fairy lights were strewn around the top of the walls. The room was warm in feeling, in emotions. He decided he’d prefer it to be warm in temperature and pulled the fuzzy brown blanket on his lower half up more, pulling it around his torso.
