His voice dips low, tone softening to something faint and slightly haunted. Shouto creeps into the crevasse he created. The next words nearly shatter the self-imposed distance entirely.
“It changed a lot for me. Nothing was the same since.”
A revelation lingers here, laced in desperation. The weight of it sits on Shouto’s lungs.
“Was it worth it?” he whispers, agonisingly hopeful and fiercely afraid all at once.
Rustling between them are the pages of the epic, a story that should not belong to them. When Katsuki looks at him, those eyes are gleaming with searing affection that is wholly staggering. For him. For this.
“Of course it was, dumbass.”
My dearest love, his voice says from a place deeper than his heart, older than his bones, I have been returned.

Silence follows, a kind so prevalent that Todoroki thinks this might just have worked. Maybe it's over and everything is fine. Maybe it's always been fine. The illusion of peace shatters when a voice cackles from seemingly nowhere.
