Hob is a merman who is fascinated by Humans and wants to learn everything about them. He rescues Morpheus, who has been driven mad by grief, from drowning. Hob wants to grill Morpheus about everything human. Morpheus can't imagine why Hob cares so much.

Summary
Private solicitor Jonathan Sims is a long way from home when, for the first time in decades, he sees something he can’t explain away.
He knows enough to fear the monsters that smile with too-sharp teeth, and knows it’s too late to hope both he and his assistant could survive their stay at Castle Magnus. The only thing he can think is to save Martin.
For once, one of Jon’s plans goes off without a hitch. Martin is saved, and in exchange, Jon’s life is forfeit.
Really, the only mistake he made was assuming that death was the end of the story.

He had been putting the pieces together regarding four missing persons who all had ties to each other, when Elias suddenly ordered Jon to abandon his research. Obviously, he’d been researching it secretly ever since. And now, he’s at the epicenter of it.

Lost and alone at the end of the world, Jon decides to try one last idea. It goes wrong, as his ideas usually do, when both the Web and the Spiral decide to interfere with what he's doing. For once the disaster goes his favor. Mostly.
He wouldn't have chosen to go back in time to when he was eight years old. He certainly wouldn't have chosen to catch Elias freaking Bouchard's attention before he's had a chance to do anything. And he cannot believe that his luck is so monumentally bad that he gets adopted by the man who wants to use him to end the world.
Jon has to figure out how to keep Elias away, while saving his friends and the world. And hopefully growing old enough that he can go anywhere on his own and be taken seriously.

In a different universe, a different realm, another Dream of the Endless meets another Robert Gadling. In a world where magic never left the realm, where dragons roam the lands and where science and magic are married rather than apart, this facet of Dream is not so heavily burdened by his function, and this Hob does not gain immortality as part of a wager.
But some pieces of the story do not change across the universes. Dream is still captured by Roderick Burgess. Hob Gadling will still lose his family, and later his wife and child to tragedy. But they will always meet, as they were meant to, and in this universe, they also get the chance to fall in love.
