Merlin is the defence against the dark arts teacher in Hogwarts during Harry’s 5th year, and Merlin being himself got on umbriges bad side and for this she tampered with one of his lessons by turning him into a 20 year old as she doubted his 20 year old self could handle a a class of 15 year olds and gets quite the shock
