Summary
Mr. Alphonse Harding has never, in all his years, been interested in the prospect of a wife. As a young man, he entered the military and served unimpeded by his lack of title or wealth for a subsequent eight years. In the final year of his service, he was sent a letter from a lawyer concerning a previously unknown will. This letter detailed an inheritance bequeathed to him of a small estate in the countryside.
The General was . . . irritated to say the least by Alphonse’s decision to abandon his military career.
Now Alphonse must decipher how to run his small estate with limited relevant experience, as all the while his neighbours the Ford’s plague him with dinner requests, tenant advice, and offers of a friendly nightcap much too late in the evening for him to travel safely home. Not to mention their daughter’s curious fixation with making him smile.

Alphonse is familiar with this repeating cycle of nightmares. One intrusive memory nagging, creeping in, until he is torn from sleep with it fully realised in minds eye, breath caught, heart racing, hands fisted in the sheets. Then with it fully embedded, it lies in wait for the moment he closes his eyes and succumbs again.
Byron, in the wreckage. One intrusive impulse made true with the knife in his hand.
In reality, Byron lies mere inches from those same hands in the warm covers of their bed. Alphonse cannot trust them. He also... cannot sleep.
But maybe, when Byron wakes from another nightmare of his own, the solution he hastily proposes might just work far better than either of them could ever expect.

He has a list of excuses in his head about why because he has slipped up to his superior officer—hands still with fear, his spine straight at attention as he snapped words he didn’t mean, words that cleaved something aching from his chest into his throat; “We’re hunting him down. Why are we considering him to still be one of us, sir?”
He got a considering nod for that one and was promptly ordered to stop thinking. His job is to fly the chopper. To be the eyes in the great blue sky, the shrike from above. The heavy hand of justice.
There is no mercy here.

Artyom is unable to bite back a shiver when Pavel's stubble rasps over his cheek. "You don't need to," he manages, but it sounds unconvincing to his own ears. "You saved me from the demon."
Pavel doesn't push though. He pulls back and smiles easily, dropping his hand from his side. "Just figure I could do something nice for you, Artyushka, but if you say we're square, we're square."
"That's not what I meant," Artyom says. He leans back against the wall and grips Pavel's wrist loosely. "Just that you don't owe me anything. If you want to... then you can. I don't need thanks otherwise."
Pavel stares at him before smiling. He leans in close again, resting his forehead against Artyom's. He closes his eyes and just focuses on the sound of Pavel's breathing.
"You've got a good heart, Artyom," the Red murmurs, "You should be more careful. Not everyone is so kind, you know."
