The events that had led up to today had been…strange—not near as strange as walking to school only to find a magic castle under the rule of a tyrant king, but still up there. It had started, as all things did these days, with a case. Well, technically it started with a drunk dare, but that was going further back in the past than needed.
(Ren knew his life was weird; it had been for the last decade. Pseudo-parenting a shrunken sixteen-year-old though, that's new.)

He missed the way a teenager stared at his retreating form as though they had just seen death in the eyes as he left through the stairs of the exhibition.

Children don't have corpses following them wherever they go, and Shinichi is struct with a feeling he had missed something important. Or, the First years get into something a bit over their heads and they're having fun, except maybe Megumi.

Summary
Everything was overtaken by nature, now, homes fallen to thick vines and trees erupting from the grounds in what most of the survivors call the cataclysm. Four months ago, the first person to be overtaken by this strange mutagen had emerged, survivors having to band together in groups to kill their loved ones to prevent being turned as well. Even the Metaverse was affected, shadows free-roaming and most of them just as infected. Amidst all of this, Ren was trying to make his way to Tokyo.

“Okie-dokes.” Kuroba shakes himself, and then turns to wave at the waiting group of suspects and witnesses with a reassuring smile. They stare blankly at him.
“They’re traumatized, Kaito-san.”
“I know. That’s why I’m being nice.”
Shinichi grabs Kuroba’s jacket and starts yanking him toward the group, ignoring his annoyed muttering. In Kuroba’s defense, he’s very good at looking reassuring. It’s just a lot less effective when he’s standing next to the corpse.

Five Pebbles dies, and then wakes again.
Bugs that walk and talk with god-given sapience, and an orange rot that’s spread throughout the entire facility grounds. What iterator could be so irresponsible as to let such an experiment waste away? On who’s grounds has he landed?
He is no bug, and this is no maze. Oh, what is a machine to do?
(in the meanwhile, the bugs look at this creature- pink, long, with too-rigid antennas and no mandibles to speak with yet so many things to say, and they see a remnant of their king. They do not realize that perhaps his kind are closer to vessels than to gods.)
TL;DR: angry calculator god in a world of bugs. Assumptions are made.
