It is for the best, she thinks, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. If you’re looking at the bigger picture, that is.
And therein lies the rub, doesn’t it? Her entire job is looking at the bigger picture, representing her people and making the world a better place. Clinging to the post if she can’t do that is contradictory and serves no one but herself.
Somewhere along the line, being senator had become a task, a role to play, separate from who she was. She had started to think of them as two different people–the senator and herself. Now she’d chained the position to herself for the stability and the surety it gave her, for the sense of purpose. Not because it was entwined with her soul, or because she thought she was the right person for the job. Not anymore.

In a way that feels more real, though, home is a place, and Anakin feels it slipping away from him like the edge of a cliff in the rain.

"Don't think I get a say in that," Jupiter whispers, shuddering out a laugh.
"Shut up," Ezra whispers fiercely. "I have to go. Don't move."

“What’s ‘this’?” Cody asks, turning the datapad over. It’s covered in numbers and names. He swipes down to see the title, the text of it not much larger than that of the body of the report. ‘Skills, Abilities and Specializations of Infantry Battalions’.
“I’m still learning,” Anakin says after a moment, voice cracking a little. “And I mess up a lot. More than Rex can make up for, more than anyone can. And it’s not enough, I know, but I’m trying.”
Cody nods, pretending that he isn’t choking up a little. “Okay. Okay. Come on, Charger’s on this shift and he makes the best caf. Can’t have a Jedi falling asleep on the bridge, bad for morale.”
Anakin pulls his wings into some semblance of order, catching up to Cody on unsteady legs. “Thanks,” he says, and neither of them acknowledge the tears at the corners of their eyes.

His head tilts at an unnatural angle, and he comes to a stop barely a meter away, staring down the barrel of her blaster. Over the comms, she can hear Narvi screaming for her to get the hell out of dodge.
"I didn't know we had patrols out in this part of the forest," he says, familiar in a way that makes her heart crawl up into her throat.
Vali comes thundering through the trees, their only functional flashlight strapped to his helmet.

Day One: Soulmate AU
Anakin’s jerkin is slashed down the side, and the smell of singed cloth fills Rex’s nose. His hand feels impossibly hot on Anakin’s skin. For a moment Rex thinks it’s because he’s burnt, but the texture is all wrong, and the heat fades just as quickly as it had welled up.
“Thanks for the catch,” Anakin says, and spares a second to give him a strange look before throwing himself back into the battle.
Rex goes to find a gun. He uses it to take potshots at Ventress and feels inordinately proud when one of them clips her shoulder, throwing off a swing. Later, he’ll think it odd that he wasn’t worried about hitting Anakin, and recall their strange synchronicity.

They told the story every year. Truces called between youth on Cockbill Street and the children of the obviously inferior surrounding streets for a night and a day. Sam could remember sitting on the grimy stone of the marketplace between a boy who'd given him a black eye a week ago and the kid who had broken his nose last year. All three of them had been enraptured in the story.
Patrician's Day meant unity against anyone pressing down hard enough to find out that water might not push back but it would rush in and pull you down with it.

Chopper wheels in, banging his face into the doorframe on the way in, because all of Hera's children possess a certain quota of requisite dumbness they have to exhibit every day. Upon hearing Kallus's declaration of friendship he goes ballistic, wheeling crazily in his direction with his shocker out and uncapped.
Hera gently nudges him off course with her foot, and he goes spinning into the corner to sulk in his charging port.
Kallus does a very poor impression of a spider, trying to climb the wall and ending up shoulder first back on the couch.
"AP-5 is my only friend," he corrects, muffled by yellow fabric.
