"Oh there she is." He juts his chin out, but it’s not possible to distinguish her amongst the other women crowding near the refreshments.
Adam's stride quickens as he gets a clear direction and it makes it hard for Adora to keep up in her heels. She's about to whisper to him to slow down when she catches sight of the woman he's making a beeline toward.
Adora's heart beats too loudly in her chest and she feels like she might throw up right there in front of every upper class Bright Mooner.
It's her. It has to be her. She's older, changed in many ways but Adora would know Catra anywhere and any time. Her face is in a polite smile that doesn't reach her eyes, the kind she used to give to Adora's friends in Eternia whenever she ran into them.
But it's the same rounded cheeks Adora remembers. The same eyes—one melted gold and the other a vibrant blue—that Adora spent hours upon hours staring into. The same lips that Adora kissed more times than she could count, the ones she'd whispered broken promises into in the middle of the night.

She'd wanted to argue with her father, to oppose the annulment until she was blue in the face, but she couldn't. Not without knowing if this is what Catra wants.
"So ... that's it then?" Catra shakes her head, lips pursed. "We're married and then tomorrow we aren't?"
Adora clenches her hands, her stomach rolling with nausea at the thought. "If that's what you want." She tries to meet Catra's eyes, but it’s too hard. "You don't have to be here against your will."
Perhaps she’s being unfair. Adora didn’t have to move to a new land full of strangers. She got to keep her life exactly as it was save for their union. If Catra wishes for her life in Halfmoon—the life she’s always known—Adora will have to find it in herself not to blame her for it.
It doesn’t make it an easy task. Adora almost feels like she's not in her own body—like she's floating above them in the moment, watching as this precious, tender thing she thought she had collapses before her.
She flinches when she feels Catra's hand on her own, not expecting it. She raises her gaze from the lush carpet to find Catra's eyes full of tears. "What if I don't want that? What if I wanted to stay?"

“You’re my one and only wife. I’ll cherish and remember you always.” Catra leans down and kisses Adora for the last time. She exhales, her spell completes the moment their lips part.
The purple veins are still prominent in Adora’s neck and jaw, but she lets out a sigh of relief and her body sinks onto the cold hard ground. “Be happy, Catra. I love—” Her voice ends abruptly, her eyes vacantly staring up—the spark Catra could recognize from anywhere gone.
She wants to break the world in half with her grief. She takes her eyes off Adora’s corpse for a moment to see the survivors of the party that attacked her palace—the men that have truly taken her wife from her.
She stands, her body shaking with rage. The men have nowhere to run but they certainly wish to, if the look of sheer terror on their faces is any indication.
“You pigs will pay for what you’ve done to me. It’ll be the last mistake you make.”

Adora’s voice was cracklier than before. “Okay. I know this is even more dumb, but I—I just wanted to tell you—character growth moment. It’s been, like, an hour, and the mouse is still out here, in the same spot. I, um, I think it’s dehydrated. It was over ninety degrees today, and the city is still, um. Pretty sticky?” Adora paused for a moment, taking an audible deep breath. “I’m bringing it some water. And I’m… I’m terrified. Of it. I’m terrified of the mouse. I—” Another shaky breath. Her voice suddenly dropped to a horrified whisper. “Oh my God, I’m scared of a mouse.”
There was a long silence, and then:
Third new message. Received—
Catra ended the call. She couldn’t breathe. Trembling with unvoiced laughter, she checked her call log.
Seven. Seven missed calls.
After going on her first ever hiking date, Catra barely made it into bed before she passed out. Daylight brought with it a few unexpected things.
Waking up early, for one; waking up feeling rested, for another; and waking up to… a slew of voicemails? From Adora?
What the fuck did she miss?

Catra looks away now, the images Adora conjures in her mind are far too appealing and intimate and she worried what might show on her face. "You think that highly of yourself?"
"No. I'll be wanting you the same way." She leans closer again, right in Catra's orbit. She leans her head down to whisper in her ear. "I have no doubt you'd wear your responsibility with honor, your majesty. But I just know you'd wear your pleasure even better." Catra can't help the sharp inhale at the feeling of Adora's lips hovering over her ear. "Let me? I want to make you feel."
She hangs on the edge of the decision. Part of her wants to shy away from the attention—she sense that what Adora wants will be honest and raw, vulnerable in a way Catra’s never allowed. But the rest of her is curious. She can’t help but wonder about her wife. About whether there is this alternate path that isn’t stiff and impersonal.
"Yes."
