She could have sworn that earlier this week, Nick looked at her with a hint of That Night’s same dark fire in his eyes. She had asked him to help her with a stubborn bracelet clasp; after he sprung the mechanism, his fingers curled briefly and unnecessarily around her wrist.
“There ya go, Jess,” he said quietly, swallowing once, his eyes on hers, before he let go and left the room.
(She’d be lying if she said she’d forgotten that asking him for help with things turned him on.)
Set in 4x22, “Clean Break," a year after Jess & Nick’s breakup and an hour after their so-much-left-unsaid Sex Mug conversation in his room. Canon divergence ahead. Originally called “Pantyhose” because of a pivotal admission by Nick about what a certain fashion choice by Jess does to him; quickly retitled in reference to an Old 97s song that captures longing and lust perfectly.

When the next letter arrived, Zuko let it sit on his desk for a whole day before opening it, as if somehow Sokka would sense, a continent away, that he was still pretty pissed about Sokka trying to rope Iroh into this whole festival visit insanity. Finally, his point proven to literally no one except himself, Zuko waited until after a long bending practice, then a full bath, before he casually picked up the letter and broke the seal.

Zuko has been Fire Lord for six years when Sokka starts trying to convince him to attend the Spring Gift festival at Wolf Cove, and Sokka isn’t taking no for an answer.

To commemorate the end of the Hundred Years' War and to ensure nothing like that ever happens again, the Four Nations agree to hold a Summit every year. Two weeks of political talks, cultural immersion and utter harmony. As Fire Lord, Zuko is in charge of hosting the first, set in the Fire Nation capital. As war-heroes, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki and of course Aang are among the guests.
However, as Katara finds herself yearning for a life beyond that of the Avatar's faithful companion, it appears that politics will not be the only turbulent waters they have to navigate.

Every time she and Sokka travel to the Fire Nation as diplomats, she gets to play Spin-the-Wheel to find out which Zuko will show up that day. Will it be Fire Lord Zuko, regal and fair; Bad Boy Zuko, arrogant and temperamental; Tortured Past Zuko, bleeding and cracked; Shy Awkward Zuko, unsure and reserved--who the hell knows? Not her. She just knows she is caught up in him, whoever he is, and has been since the catacombs.
