Everyone always says to double-check who you’re texting; especially when it's something you'd never want a certain someone to see. But did Penelope Featherington listen? Of course not.
Fresh off a disastrous date, one she should have never agreed to go on; she was venting to both Eloise and Colin in separate texts… or so she thought. One chaotic post-date rant later, she fires off a message response meant for Eloise, and only Eloise....accidentally going straight to Colin.
And while she’s blissfully unaware of her texting mishap, Colin is now having a full-on internal meltdown, practically foaming at the mouth by what she just wrote. The "not so causal mention" of lip liner shades and nipples, is all he can think about. Suddenly, those “totally platonic, we are just friends, best friends” feelings he’s been pretending not to have? Yeah… not so platonic after all. He’s basically one raised eyebrow away from combusting.

It's the worst thing that has ever happened to her, but after a few months of wallowing, Penelope moves to Scotland and buys a book shop and gets on with her life. It turns out she can live without the Bridgertons and she's happy enough with the new life she's cobbled together. No one knows anything about her here and that's how she likes it: complete and total separation from her life back in London and her old online persona.

Penelope stared at him. “Now why on God’s green earth would you want to do that?” she asked, more bluntly than was perhaps proper for a young lady. “We can’t pay you.” Their father had left them with almost nothing, save this land and the house they were standing on. It was a pretty nice house - better than some of the others in the area - but life was hard.
He shook his head and turned his hat over in his hands. “No, I didn’t expect you could. I hoped you might instead pay me in kind.”
Penelope’s cheeks flushed red and she looked down, her hands smoothing the faded yellow cotton of her day dress. She didn’t suppose he meant what it sounded like he meant, being a gentleman and all, but the idea of Colin Bridgerton taking that sort of payment from her made her cheeks hot.
