Summary
Irene is counting the seconds in her head. That’s how she knows that it takes forty-five seconds for everything to go to hell. Eugenides looks calm, poised, beautiful, and then on the first side-by-side jumping pass, he lands wrong on his right foot and goes down hard, dragging an audible groan from the audience. Eddis, ever the professional, lands beautifully and keeps going, which is why it takes another two seconds for her to realize that Eugenides isn’t getting up.

Irene Attolia is a competitive pairs figure skater. Her rival, Eddis, has the most annoying partner in the world, and Irene decides that if the universe isn't going to do her a favor and get rid of Eugenides, then she's going to have to take matters into her own hands.

Irene thinks she might go mad if she keeps turning her dwindling choices and her past mistakes over and over in her head all alone, and maybe it’s time to use that anonymous internet chatroom handle she made for the sake of lurking online and gauging the Attolian populace’s problems for a new purpose: seeking random internet advice.
It doesn’t take long for Gen and Irene to start a private message conversation, neither suspecting who the other is … nor for them to become each other’s main source of support when nightmares leave them awake in the dead of night.

When Percy and Annabeth’s wars are won and the prophecies are about other people, it’s almost easy to forget. Hubris becomes Annabeth refusing to admit she’s wrong. Loyalty becomes Percy’s tendency to put the needs of others before his own. Peace lulls memory into rest, slowing the mind and the heart until they are fickle things. Peace itself is a fickle thing.
They still train—they are still demigods. War is in their blood, running through their veins alongside humanity and divinity. It’s never over.
