"I won't-" Aziraphale says, then stops with a huff. "Look," he continues. "I can't save them all - nobody can - but I can save some, and that's more than enough reason to go."
"To go and get yourself discorporated."
Aziraphale goes to France to help with the war effort. It doesn't end as planned.

Summary
“If the king is so concerned about Merlin,” he asks, looking at Leon, “Why does he always take him along on quests and patrols? It’s not necessary to bring a servant, and he’s clearly worried—”
Leon smiles. “We’ve often asked the same thing,” he says, and shrugs. “But I don’t think Merlin would allow himself to be left behind, so any argument is moot.”
“He could order him,” Mordred says.
“Merlin would just follow,” Leon says. “It’s easier to include him from the start. Sometimes, I think those two just need to be close to each other. Hard enough to keep them apart anyway, even at the beginning, when they were just constantly sniping at each other.”
When Mordred looks back, Arthur’s arm is around Merlin’s shoulder, and he is smiling broadly. Merlin’s eyes are bright and focused on Arthur, and his lips are tugged upwards, as if he can’t quite stop himself.
Merlin loves Arthur to the point of fear, Mordred realises.

Summary
Things have changed after Camlann but some things are always going to stay the same.
The door behind the throne creaks open and Arthur doesn’t have to turn to see who it is. There’s something about the way Merlin is, now, that seems to change the air around him, make it heavier and easier to breathe all at once. Gwaine swears that once, when Merlin was angry, he felt his ears pop. (Leon says that Merlin had probably popped Gwaine’s ears purposefully, and that Gwaine had deserved it.)
“Done for the day, my lord?” he asks in a murmur, appearing at Arthur’s arm with that gravity and silent, storm-swelling magnitude. Arthur remembers his face — the older face, cragged with years Merlin hasn’t yet lived — picked out in white lightning and so, so angry. (Arthur remembers this face, too — the young one that looks old anyways — in the blue twilight of that thicket, standing over Arthur’s sister, so sad and so, so angry.) “Arthur?”

Summary
Merlin breaks off as his gaze falls on Arthur, and all the colour drains from his face so quickly, Arthur’s afraid he might just faint. The picture is only worsened by how still Merlin’s suddenly become, except for where his chest starts to rise and fall increasingly fast.
“Merlin?” Arthur asks, not bothering to mask the worry that’s curling around his ribs, and he takes a step closer, pain all but forgotten.
Or - the first time Arthur gets hurt after his return, Merlin doesn't take it well.

“Flowers,” Arthur repeats dubiously. “Merlin is out… selling flowers.”
“The cornflowers sell especially well,” Gaius says.
Or: Merlin, on his trips to find herbs for Gaius, starts bringing home flowers. It doesn’t take long until the townspeople of Camelot start asking for specific flowers, and for Merlin to start taking orders.
Things sort of spiral.

Summary
“I… I will not be able to convince him to stop fighting.” Patroclus said carefully, wary of displeasing a god, “Even my word cannot dissuade him from his destiny.”
“See that’s the fun part, you don’t have to convince him of anything.” Hypnos smiled, “In fact, you don’t have to do anything for this plan. We’re just gonna take you out of the equation for a little bit, that’s all, grant Achilles some clarity of mind.” Patroclus’ eyes went wide as he put it together, fists clenching on his thighs at Hypnos’ blithe air over such a cruel plan.
“I am to be held hostage?” he rasped, heart heavy and throat tight, “To be used against Achilles like... like a favored toy dangled over a misbehaving child?”

Summary
"I feel,” Aziraphale begins, then immediately falters, hands starting up a familiar fidget. “I still feel as if.” He swallows unnecessarily, and then finally confesses, “It’s just that I still feel a tremendous deal of shame. Over. Over everything.”
Crowley snorts, turning back to his newspaper in a last ditch effort to avoid wherever this is going. “I believe the kids are calling it ‘Catholic guilt’ these days, Angel.”
Aziraphale’s face scrunches up with distaste. “We’re hardly Catholic, my dear.”
*
After everything, Crowley and Aziraphale attempt to mend the holes in their relationship. They go about it as haphazardly as they do everything else.

Summary
Here in the South Downs cottage, Crowley has more than he ever thought he would: the two of them, safe, and he gets to live alongside Aziraphale every day. He still can't bring himself to say it, though, still finds himself wanting, doesn't want to drag the angel down with the mess of his love, doesn't want to ruin what they have.
Aziraphale, however, is getting tired of Crowley staring longingly off into the night sky, and confronts him.
There is more of a balance here than Crowley thought.
***
The angel smiles. That crinkling kindness, that laugh in the corner of him, bright and deathless and pure, and Crowley’s resolve is melting. Aziraphale does remove his glasses now, fingers brushing his temples, folds them into his own pocket, pocketing Crowley’s last defense. Neither of them looks away. The night sounds clutter around them, the sway of elderly oak branches, the gentle scuttle of a village turning itself into bed, reinventing for the next day, the caw and croon of things with feathers, searching for love. A knowing hum in an ancient throat, leaning in.

Summary
“You said something, back in Tadfield, while we were waiting for the bus,” Aziraphale says. “It’s been rattling about in my mind ever since.”
“If you’re talking about the invite back to my place, that was a shameless ploy to get you to clean up the holy water and what was left of Ligur,” Crowley says.
It’s a lie – Crowley had been as surprised as anyone to rediscover the remains of his former colleague on the floor of his flat, the night the world didn’t end. What it had been, Aziraphale is sure, was an unsubtle way to say ‘please don’t leave me alone’, a sentiment Aziraphale more than shares. He never intends to leave Crowley alone ever again, if he can help it. He’s had more than enough of that for one eternal lifetime.
“No,” he says, shaking his head. “I’m talking about something else. You suggested that everything, our prevention of Armageddon included, was perhaps part of the Ineffable Plan.”

Summary
Aziraphale took a deep breath and stepped round the corner, trying to school his face into something properly angelic. "Be not afraid," he said. As opening gambits went it wasn't spectacular, but it was traditional and he wasn't up to inventing something on the spot.
The demon Crawly stood there, defiant, a gaggle of children shoved behind him. "I won't let you take them. I don't care what Heaven thinks."
"Be not afraid," the angel said again, focusing on the children who were, in fact, very, very afraid. His voice was going soft, and he resolutely avoided looking at Crawly. "I come not to harm thee."
OR, Aziraphale fell in love on the Ark. Crowley took a little longer.

Summary
It's far closer than they usually sit. No longer a row between them, a couch away, on opposite sides of a bench. They’re pressed side by side now, as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. And maybe it could be, maybe it always has. Like this, he can feel all the peaks and valleys of the demon’s lithe frame flush against his softer one. Even on the uncomfortable seats, he can’t help but think they fit together remarkably well.
He looks down and Crowley’s hand is still curled around his wrist. In a moment of bravery, he moves his own up and laces their fingers, pressing their palms together. Those, he’s happy to find, fit together remarkably well too.
Or: 6000 years and a night in a Mayfair flat, after the world doesn’t end.
