Yuuri’s voice cut off and he gave a frustrated-sounding sigh.
“We all worry about you, you know. Because when you care about someone, you want to know them,” he continued, and the gentling of his voice on the last sentence made Viktor look away, afraid that he’d reveal too much by way of the slight wobble in the set of his mouth.
Yuuri wanted to know him? He wanted to know about his silly nightmares, or why Viktor was far more comfortable turning mean and petty rather than soft and yielding when confronted with his own negative emotions?
It seemed far too good to be true, because it was only a matter of time before Yuuri realized that Viktor was too much and not enough; his parents had beat that truth into him, and well after their estrangement, Viktor heard their snide remarks march through his head.
So caught up in his own pity party, he almost didn’t hear Yuuri continue.
“So you can deflect…flash that fake smile I’m beginning to hate so much, or say sharp things that you think will push me away. But that won’t stop me from worrying about you.”

I get such secondhand embarrassment sometimes by the things I read in this subreddit. Most notably: the use of the word “botched” when it comes to Yuuri and Sochi. I think I may be driven to commit homicide if I see yet another person talk about last night’s livestream “scandal” with some throwaway comment like “oh, no wonder Yuuri got trashed at the banquet, he’d just completely botched his chance to impress Viktor”. Listen here, you shriveled rutabagas!!! YUURI DIDN’T ‘BOTCH’ ANYTHING, NOT THEN AND NOT EVER!!
I’m sorry to have to bring root vegetables into this, but have these people just been ignoring all of Viktor’s interviews these last 3 years?!

But now that we’re up here and I can see how excited you are by it all even after being here for a few months…it feels like a reminder to appreciate what’s in front of me.”
A loaded silence stretched out between them and Viktor could only blink a few times in astonishment as he tried his best to catalogue what such heartfelt words brought up for him.
In the moment, he was stunned at how relieved the admission made him feel; he knew, instinctively, that Yuuri had been enjoying himself during this outing, but even so, it soothed a deep-seated ache within him that wondered if his “oohing” and “aahing” over every little thing he could see was getting annoying.

“Oh, my! Are you alright?” Viktor urgently questioned, laying a hand on his shoulder while Yuuri tried to attend to his streaming nose.
His tone was genuine, but Yuuri knew him well enough by now to pick up on the glee at making him lose composure so early on in their role-playing. As he wiped his chin, he threw Viktor a dirty look, noting how he was trying not to laugh.
“I’m f-fine, Pantalaimon. My name is Lee, by the way,” Yuuri managed to choke out in between a few hoarse coughs. “Lee Scoresby. I was caught off-guard because for a second, I thought I saw someone I knew on the dancefloor.”
And because his nose was stinging pretty acutely, Yuuri decided to lean into his petty side.
“I thought I’d seen my ex, Chihoko,” he nonchalantly went on, now having to fight a grin at the betrayed look his husband shot him. “She had a very distinctively bend-y dance style, it was kind of unmistakable.”

Crying was still a new enough thing for Viktor that he often didn’t even realize it was happening, but this was not one of those times; tears of joy and overwhelm and sheer relief dripped steadily down his cheeks, and he grounded himself in the sensation.
Before he could even think about wiping them away, Yuuri whipped out his favorite Makka-printed handkerchief, put it into Viktor’s hand and mechanically brought his arm up to his face.

It was a seven word reaction that was so completely Mari: a suggestion offered in the measured, almost subdued sort of tone that someone else might have taken for disinterest.

Stricken with sadness around Viktor’s grief at not being able to skate with Makkachin one last time before her imminent death, Yuuri turns to Hasetsu’s local witch in desperation. With the age regression spell that she grants, Viktor gets to inhabit his nimble teenage body, while Makka gets to experience being a puppy again. And the Katsuki-Nikiforovs are able to spend a final perfect day with their beloved poodle. -

Viktor was crying out by this point and Yuuri noted how he’d pressed his face into the towel. He smirked; that wouldn’t do. He gave the base of Viktor’s ponytail a firm tug at the same time that he landed the next blow.

At the same time, his hips made a desperate circle, prompting Yuuri to hiss when he could feel him through the towel.

“Well, I strongly disagree,” he loudly countered, already able to imagine the slew of disgruntled comments this loyalty might generate.

“Viktor’s so much more exuberant than I expected,” Yuuri murmured, a statement which prompted Viktor's heartrate to pick up.
He wondered if Yuuri meant this in a good or bad way.
Viktor’s parents might have called him something similar as a kid, but of course, their connotation had always been negative. Fear pricked at the wet ends of his coiled fur; did his new student think he was too much, as well?
“He’s always acted so serious in his interviews, but I’m starting to realize that he’s actually kind of a goofball, isn’t he?” Yuuri went on, musingly, and the earlier panic that had gripped him subsided a bit at his tone. “It’s kind of nice…it makes him seem more human.”
And how ironic, because Viktor had certainly never felt less human in his life, as his doggy heart thudded within the confines of Makkachin's furry frame.

In the midst of Yuuri and Yurio preparing for Onsen on Ice, Viktor discovers that for a 3 hour period every day, he can swap bodies with his beloved Makka. Given that Yuuri appears far more comfortable around her than around him, Viktor is thrilled by this discovery, even as it poses some obvious complications for their developing relationship

The knot of anxiety in Yuuri’s stomach loosened with the knowledge that his idea to surprise Viktor wasn’t being rejected.
“Oh! I’ve actually always wanted to learn Russian! It’d make things way easier when I’m watching certain ballet videos.” (Minako-sensei, waving her sake glass around so wildly that a majority of it sloshes out directly onto Lutz’s head)
“This will probably require some clandestine family meetings via Skype…you better come up with a good cover story, otouto, or Vik-chan will get suspicious and think you’re cheating on him.” (Mari-neechan, folding her arms against her chest with a wry smirk)
Yuuri began to splutter at that last one, though he could honestly see the scenario his sister voiced playing out in reality; he Skyped his family/friends pretty regularly, but even he had to admit that this scheme would require multiple video calls a week.

Given Viktor’s estrangement from his parents, Yuuri can see how much he’s hurting in the course of planning their wedding. In an effort to remind him that he’s already a Katsuki, he enlists his friends and family in a secret, 10-month scheme to learn Russian, culminating with a speech for Viktor at their reception -

Yuuri met Viktor’s eyes for only another brief moment and then they were both cackling, outright, the sound causing Makka, Meni, and Goya to begin barking like mad.
“If we ever come clean to the public about writing smutty fanfic, we’re getting that pr-printed for a merch line!” his husband gasped, dabbing his eyes with the corner of his Yurio plushie.
Yuuri began to laugh even harder, feeling slightly hysterical at the thought of what their publicists would make of such a venture.
