Upon returning to Trost to tell Hange of Erwin's disappearance Onyankopon discloses a rumor that Marley has been experimenting on Eldians to see if they can reverse death.

He'd made it through being a streetrat, losing his family, and having to relocate to a whole other city after getting into one too many fights with the idiots who would rather point a gun at you than get a real job. Starved within an inch of his life, losing everything nearly overnight, and yet the thing that was kicking his ass was ink. On a page. The book wasn't even that complicated looking. It had a plain cover and a short title. He thought maybe if he looked at the letters long enough he'd get something to click.
- Levi's attempts to try to teach himself to read are interrupted by Erwin, a stranger, who for some reason, seems interested in explaining the complexities of grammar to him.
