Andromache’s head falls back as his nimble fingers work at the ties of her petticoat and she has half a mind to lift her hips, to make this just a hair easier on him, but where would the fun be in that? “Mmm, Joe and Nicolò,” she teases, voice biting as Sébastien’s fingertips tickle over the dip next to her hipbones. “And what do Joe and Nicolò say about things like this?”
Andromache indulges Sébastien in a simple request and finds the results far more enjoyable than she would have thought.

He must’ve died screaming.
“You were shot down,” Copley continues, unfazed and unwilling to give up on the interrogation. He’s like a fly, nagging and buzzing at Booker, pushing for the knowledge of things he can not possibly comprehend. “You fell from the top of a building and landed in a broken heap at the base of it.”
Booker stares and his reflection in the water trough. It distorts into a ripple each time the truck drops into another hole in the road. Merde’ he looks like shit, and it's not just the blood and dirt from the rubble, it’s from years and years and years of the same old same old. Booker’s getting older. Not on the outside, of course, but still. He can see it. His reflection does not look like a man but a sickened, tired, measly old dead thing.

Joe nods, still staring at the screen like a man possessed. “I don’t understand it, but this is what Booker needs,” he whispers, scrubbing at his tired eyes with his fingertips. “This is what he needs and he keeps ending up in the hospital because he doesn’t have anyone who will do it the way he deserves.” There’s a sharp edge of determination in his husband’s voice that Nicky can’t ignore and Joe’s eyes burn a little with passion when he finally looks at Nicky. “We need to do something.”
Nicky lets out a heavy breath and slips a hand over the older man’s thigh. “Do you think it has to be us?”
“I don’t know. Maybe.”
After picking Booker up from the emergency room for the third time in four months, Joe and Nicky stage an intervention of sorts. The ultimatum: the next time Booker needs whatever he needs, he has to come to Joe. Nicky knows that this is the only way it can be—the only way to move forward safely—but something in the back of his mind tells him that they're going to get a lot more than they signed up for.

Summary
Nicolò looks sheepish. "I killed you yesterday, and you awoke at the same time, the same place. But when I die, I wake at different times, different places. This bolt," he tosses it to Yusuf and it lands in the dirt by his knee, "it killed me yesterday, but I woke up many years from now. I lived several lifetimes in those places before returning here and pulling it from my neck."
Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.

There in his squalid Parisian flat, with his gun out and pointing at Quỳnh, of all people, all he could think was how completely and utterly incapable he was of addressing the situation.
