This is fairly common knowledge, considering his attire, but Maddie didn't make the connection until she overheard him talking about it with some of the other ghosts. Then she notices how much he looks like Danny. How much he sounds like him. How similar their mannerisms are, and their habits, and their sense of humor.
Unfortunately, she still manages to come to some slightly wrong conclusions.

Summary
Despite saving Baldur's Gate - and perhaps more importantly, killing Cazador - Astarion still finds himself unhappy and haunted by the past. He lives in fear of losing his new friends and lover, and is forced to cower in the shadows from the sun. When the decision to release Cazador's seven-thousand vampire spawn into the underdark comes back to haunt him, Astarion decides to play at being a hero again and journey's into the Underdark with his remaining companions, only to find a warm welcome isn't waiting for him. Sebastian and the other's he led to Cazador are seeking revenge on him is and his siblings, and Astarion is forced to confront the past he wants nothing more than to run away from.

With two discerning appetites, a deal to keep each other fed is the one thing that ties Astarion and Gale together. But the proverbial collar slips all too easily around Gale's throat, the lead feels right in Astarion's unchained hands, and both men think they've bested the other in a game neither should be playing.
In any case. As the greats say in lanceboard: there is no shame in losing to a stronger foe.
