Summary
It starts with a mug of hot chocolate. That in itself isn’t unusual; the decadent Earth beverage is something Shepard has an odd fondness for, and he fixes it for Liara on occasion. But this one is different. He brings it to her in a red mug with a green conifer painted on the side, and there is a strange red and white striped hooked cane lolling around the rim like a straw.
“What,” Liara asks curiously, “is that?”
“Hot chocolate,” he replies, canting his head slightly with an odd look on his face.
“I know what the liquid is. What is that.” She points at the ridiculous looking object inside it, and when Shepard glances down, she could swear he flushes a little.
“It’s, ah. It’s a candy cane.”

Summary
“You have to be fine,” he says, but doesn’t put in the message. He sticks it in the outgoing queue. No hails from Shepard before they’d escaped the local cluster. No telling exactly what that wave of green energy had done, if there had even been any ships able to go back and look for him.
Not knowing anything is the most frustrating thing of all.
There’s no telling how long it’ll be before they’re connected to any kind of network again, if ever. Maybe he’ll die of old age on this planet while Shepard searches the galaxy for them. At least Shepard would have survived to search.

Summary
Life was just starting to make sense again. The apartment felt almost like home. Shepard was mostly back on his feet again, and Kaidan was looking forward to resuming his teaching duties. Then the headache to end all headaches upended everything.
The past has a way of coming back to bite you when you least expect it, and Kaidan has a lot more past than he's mentioned.
