Inside, the party continues as if their hostess hasn’t abandoned them. Bass thumps in Caitlyn’s chest and she flicks the half-spent cigarette from her fingers and watches the embers fade as it falls to the sidewalk below, then explode into hundreds of tiny sparks against the concrete.
“Vi isn’t coming,” Jinx says. “Did you see her text?”
The animosity normally present in her voice is strangely absent. Instead, Jinx just sounds resigned. Caitlyn grimaces a little, wishing she had some way to cover for Vi. “I was hoping maybe she’d make it after all. It is your birthday.”

Alicent Hightower is the woman behind the car itself—the Number One Mechanic. Every build goes through her from chassis up. For two years, she's been working with Ferrari—specifically on Rhaenyra's car. The only problem with this is the two of them spend most of their time in the garage trying not to bite each other's heads off.

It’s a downright demeaning way to live, she inherently knows this. Alicent used to think one day she would let the guilt get the best of her and end this thing between them before it even really got started, but she’s come to realize over the last few months how weak she is.
It makes her feel dizzy to realize how afraid she is, and how despite that fear, she does it anyway. Gives in time and time again, like Rhaenyra is not a spoiled brat and instead some undeniable force of nature.
(Or, where time and time again Rhaenyra proves she is far from being scrupulous to get what she wants, and time and time again Alicent proves she can’t deny what she undeniably wants.)
