On his worst days, Akira texts him.
Discreetly, when Morgana’s not looking, because Akira hates the pitying stare he receives in return—the soft, concerned call of his name with a hint of a warning, a lecture Morgana only sometimes leaves unsaid.
Akira often wonders what became of Akechi’s smartphone. If it was sealed in an evidence bag at some station back in Tokyo, or abandoned in Akechi’s old apartment, or tossed in the trash when no one came to collect his belongings. Or maybe Akechi had his phone on him when he entered the Metaverse and never returned, his phone buried in the collapsed wreckage of Shido’s palace, sunken to the bottom of a cognitive sea.
Regardless, none of Akira’s messages ever go through. All he receives is the same, automated text:We’re sorry, you’ve reached a number that has been disconnected

“I know what you are,” says Shi Wudu.
Immediately, He Xuan falls still. What? How did he find out? Hundreds of years of planning, each word and action carefully crafted…was it Hua Cheng? Did he sell him out? He’d only do that if Shi Wudu had information on that crown prince he’s so obsessed with, but there’s no way, right?
“You,” Shi Wudu leans forward, resting his chin on his folded hands. The entire world around him goes still, and He Xuan’s eyes fall gently closed. “You’re in love with Qingxuan, aren’t you?”
Silence.
He Xuan’s head snaps up. “What?”

Summary
A woman is laying on his roof.
He Xuan doesn’t see her at first, given the sun has long since dipped past the horizon. He probably wouldn’t have noticed her at all, had a very loud and obnoxious sneeze not disturbed the quiet lull of the tide. There he is, two plastic bags carrying an assortment of instant ramen, cereal, and canned coffee in each hand when a sudden ACHOO! startles him so fiercely that he tumbles backward into the sand.
He Xuan is pushing himself to his feet, begrudgingly wiping sand off his ass when it happens again. That same, violent sneeze resounds against the gentle lull of the ocean, startling a seagull to abandon pecking at a rotten apple core in its haste to fly away. Rather than responding with yet another ungraceful fall, He Xuan calls out a questionable, “Bless you?”
“Thanks!” a light, breezy voice responds.
He Xuan retreats to a small seaside cottage with an unfinished manuscript, shouldering the burden of his late fiancé's dream. There, he encounters a whimsical individual battling a storm of their own.

And after all, there’s no time like the present. Why make a vague promise to stay in touch when they could seize the moment right after their first meeting? Why not make the first move before their opponent even realises the match has started?
It’s not like spending the day together could somehow change the game completely...
(OR: Akira accidentally speedruns Akechi’s entire confidant track on the day they meet, and opens up some new options in the process.)
