Summary
Three weeks after Eddie dies, he shows up in Steve’s kitchen.
“So,” he says, “do you want to hear something totally crazy, Harrington?”
It’s three in the morning. Steve had wandered downstairs to get a glass of water only to find Eddie looming in front of the sink. “Uhh,” he says, because he’s still not entirely sure he’s not hallucinating. “Sure?”
Eddie smiles. It sends warning bells ringing in the back of Steve’s head. “I think I might be a fucking vampire.”

Summary
So it goes like this. The three times that Steve Harrington’s life changed for the better include:
First, on July 5th, 1985, in a hospital room in Hawkins when Robin Buckley snuck into his room with an IV pole trailing behind her and crawled into his bed before making him promise that they’d be friends for the rest of their lives.
Second, on October 13th, 1993, sitting in a cold chair in a social worker’s office and watching the door open while holding his breath, on the day that he first met Winnie and knew instantly that this was his son.
And then today, in some dingy bar in Boston when he looks up from the drink he’s nursed for the better part of two hours and learns after eleven years of mourning that Eddie Munson is alive and just as beautiful as he’s ever been.

But Eddie likes this kid, likes all of them actually.
Dustin turns to look at him, a small smile on his lips, his eyes softening, and bingo.

Steve leans against the side of the boathouse and lets Eddie fumble with the cheap Bic lighter for a minute before he clears his throat and says, “You want a light?”
It's hard to read his tone. There's a bitter, suspicious, self-defensive part of Eddie that wants to lash out, but instead he grips the lighter until the plastic creaks and says, “Sure. If you have one.”
“Yeah.” Steve digs in his pocket and comes up with a nice Zippo. He doesn't hand it to Eddie; instead, he flicks the flame on and holds it out for him to lean down, and there's an intimacy to it that Eddie wasn't quite expecting. Like one of those old Leyendecker paintings. He imagines this tableau sketched out in clean art deco lines: the prom king and the freak. A study in contrasts.

Steve doesn't know what the invisible force that attacked him in the woods is, but he does know three things for sure: that Robin's cryptid podcast is somehow making more money than his Scoops Ahoy manager job; that every seven years something crawls out of a network of tunnels underneath the woods outside of Hawkins, and now it's out for revenge; and that it would be really nice if poltergeists would stop beating him up when he's trying to flirt with the local ghost whisperer.

Waiting kind of impatiently, to be honest, even though it’s not like he has anywhere else to be because Robin’s busy tonight and, as he well knows by this point, saving the world doesn’t get you a girlfriend or glory or even a second age-appropriate friend, it just gets you another evening shift at Family Video and a long personal to-do list.
In the spring and summer of 1986, Steve Harrington contends with the biases of the day, hatches several plans, and finally really gets to know Eddie Munson.

Summary
The mall is destroyed. El’s lost her powers. Billy’s dead. So is Hopper. Steve is probably fucked up mentally for life, but what else is new? Steve has a pretty good thing going. He has kids to take care of, an awkward lesbian to advise. Max needs a big brother. Hawkins is his home, and Steve can’t just leave. Not while he’s still needed. He knows one day he won’t be. But for now, it’s enough.
Or: the Harringtons sell their house before the real estate market goes belly-up. Hawkins has been going downhill for years, anyway. His parents give Steve a choice: move with them and finally take that job at his dad’s company or get left behind. For Steve, it wasn’t much of a choice at all. He may not have a house anymore, but his BMW’s backseat has served as a bed plenty of times already. No one has to know. The party has enough problems to worry about.
Or: Eddie Munson worms his way into Steve’s sorry little life months before Vecna rears his ugly head.

No one has caught Steve Harrington’s eye in a while, and he’s not going to go looking. And with his tendency to get involved with interdimensional bullshit and the gaggle of teenagers that follows him around, it’s probably for the best. He quickly learns that the universe has other plans for him, and they come in the shape of a goofy, guitar-wielding nerd.
In which Steve is just trying to live his life but Eddie is essentially hitting him over the head with a very flirtatious hammer.

It’s probably going to go down in history as the worst kiss Steve Harrington ever got, but Eddie doesn’t give a fuck. He isn’t going to get another chance so he’s working with what he’s got. It’s less of a kiss, and more of a slide of lips, wet with blood and tears but he feels Harrington’s grip tighten on the back of his shirt and he pulls back. He reaches up with the hand he can still feel and pushes back a strand of hair that had fallen in Steve’s face, smearing blood along his temple as he does.
