It is in this monochrome that a drop of red blooms.
Xingqiu catches sight of a flash of vermillion in the washed-out scenery. A girl bounds past him, her twin ponytails trailing behind her. She’s wearing a red spider lily hair clip, the flower from the other side. Before he can get another glance, she disappears from his periphery as swiftly as she had appeared, leaving him to wonder if he’d just seen a ghost.

Kazuha’s heart tugs a little, hearing her sing about a non-existent full moon and a home. They know she isn’t doing this on purpose; she doesn’t know their story, but oh, how beautifully tragic it is that she should be singing about the one thing Kazuha cannot, lest the truth is uglier out in the open. They had been raised to put much importance on their origins, their family, their home, but time and time again they’ve chosen to leave the land of thunder and eternity. Is it wrong? Is it wrong to want to leave a place that no longer holds any happy memory that hasn’t been struck to ashes? Is it wrong that they seek a home when it is supposed to be right there?
Xinyan sings of a beautiful place. Kazuha wants to go there, where there is a full moon, where eternity isn’t a painful standstill, but a constant as solid and homely as nature. She sings, and their worries are gently washed away. She sings, and Kazuha thinks that, just maybe, there is a place for them out there, after all.

“Of course I did.” Ningguang tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. The airport is full of white noise, the sound of footsteps overlapping with announcements over the intercom. Ningguang speaks softly, but Beidou hears her.
Beidou nods absently, feeling incredibly out of her element. “Did you bring your passport? Wallet?”
Ningguang scoffs lightly. “Now you’re just looking down on me. Why would I forget to bring such important things?”
Beidou doesn’t answer. “Your phone? You brought your phone, right? And the keys?”
The keys to the apartment we bought together before you said you had to leave?
Ningguang finally, finally, looks at her.
In this vast world, they keep coming back to each other.

In the forest, the cicadas chirp at night, interrupting her words every now and then. The bake-danuki burrow next to her feet is a small, empty hole. No one is listening to her, no one but the night sky.
“I think what I need is to know that I’m doing the right thing. You know what taking Visions is like, little creature?” She leans down and snatches one of the gold coins the bake-danuki have in their tiny paws. They start screeching indignantly. “Like that. I do that in the name of the Shogun. I take away what people hold dear, for the sake of eternity.”
“I need to know, little creature. Am I doing the right thing?”
She is just another cog in the machine that serves the Raiden Shogun.
