Summary
It seems like there should be a very neat line, at least for humans, between dead and not dead, but I’ve seen enough messy half-alive humans to know that there is no such clear distinction. I’ve seen bodies that were still breathing despite missing part of their heads, bodies that weren’t breathing despite their owners being fully conscious. I wouldn’t call either option alive. I wouldn’t call either option dead, either.
For a machine intelligence, the border is even blurrier. It's hard to say which side of it I will stand on when they're through with me.

“You’re safe.”

Summary
The whole thing took 3.7 minutes. It was impersonal, efficient, and streamlined, just the way the corporates liked it. Oh, and the new construct was screaming the whole time.

When SecUnit meets up again with the PresAux team in Exit Strategy no one comments on the fact it’s slightly shorter, and now has more* human hair (not just hair on the head, and eyebrows; that was a part of SecUnit configuration).
Admittedly there is, at that point, a lot going on.
I reckon one of them would have noticed; and made certain extrapolations from this, and other changes in SecUnit’s behaviour.
*more as in more of it, and also more human-like.
