If Mason were to close his eyes and picture Theo, he’d see him mean-eyed and dangerous. Phony charm shed like snake skin baring malintent. His aftermath, Melissa hunched over Scott’s lifeless body doing chest compressions.
Not like this. Hazy and unnervingly honest. Tips of his ears red, pressing his palms to his cheeks to soak up their warmth. Mason saw it down there, in the basement. The way a slice of pizza and a bear hug from Liam thawed all of his standoffishness into a puddle of belonging. Pity invite or not, Theo showed up for a reason.
Mr. Maybe-I-Want-To-Be-In-The-Pack tries, Mason can at least give him that.

Theo’s kinda enraptured by the way his hair fans out beneath the nozzle, how his eyes cut through the mop of hair, land on Theo and linger. He’s crouching in a brown puddle of dirty faucet water suds and diluted blood and for a fleeting moment Theo thinks he’s pretty the same way broken glass is when it catches the light.

Liam asks, “Are you going to stay this time?”
A naive hope always lingers in this routine, in Liam’s foolish conviction that this time will be different. That this time, Theo’s truck will remain in the driveway, that the last vestiges of the chimera won’t be receding headlights and the rumbling of an engine.
It’s a sad disguise: Liam resting his chin in his free hand with a casual grin stretching onto his lips as he gazes at the dead-end boy lying atop his bedspread like he simply asked if Theo has any plans this weekend.
Theo doesn’t tear his gaze from the television, hollow as ever when he finally parts his lips to speak.
“Nah, I don’t think I will,” he shrugs.
Familiar routine like reading from an old script, pages yellowing with age.
“Okay,” Liam says, offering a jerky nod. That grin feels a little tighter on his face, too manufactured. “That’s fine.”

Really, it was just this: Liam destroying Kira’s sword as a one-sided act of faith, Liam’s breathless shout of laughter after finding the right car key to steal a police cruiser, almost-fistbumps in the hospital hallway, wide blue eyes flashing briefly golden in a shattered mirror, Mykonos, Theo gingerly cleaning blood off a still-unconscious Liam’s healing hands.

Theo doesn’t know what B-movie, monster-of-the-week bullshit the McCall pack has gotten itself entangled with, but he does know that he’s looking forward to lording over them the fact that he’s undoubtedly going to have to go help rescue whichever of the starry-eyed morons gets themselves captured or nearly killed—or both—this time. He’s already smirking to himself just thinking about it, methodically carving through another handful of the strange indistinct black things that had detached themselves from the late-afternoon shadows in his borrowed apartment, and attacked him.
Only—that isn’t how it’s going to go, he’s slowly realizing, because two of the creatures that he’d already scythed through merely reform without so much as a flinch as he watches, and throw themselves back at him.
