Goodnight liked to say that they met in a bar fight, that he watched Billy take down a gang or sometimes even the whole bar with a single knife or just his hairpin or naught but his two hands. The story changed a little each time he told it. It was never how it actually happened, but it was how Goodnight liked to tell it, so Billy never amended it.
He knew why Goodnight didn’t like to tell it how it had been. They both did. But if Goodnight needed to pretend something else, if that helped him to cope, then Billy sure as hell wasn’t going to remind him of something different.
There had been a bar fight, at least.

" - don't need your help," snapped a strangely familiar voice. Goodnight frowned, mind tumbling through page after page of distant memory, trying to place it. "It's four goddamn stairs, I ain't scaling a mountain."
"You almost fell coming up the porch, guerito," a second voice responded, chiding. The low, thick accent of it jarred Goodnight starkly back into the past, immediately revealing the identity of both speakers. "Just give me your hand, idiota terco."
"Damn," Billy muttered with feeling, as he too recognized the strangers. He cut a dark, knowing look at Goodnight, eyes narrowing at the sudden, elated edge to Goodnight's grin.

Despite later claims by Porpentina Goldstein, the first thing that Newt Scamander, illegal magizoologist, actually said to Graves was “Oh. I really didn’t think that there were two of those.”
Graves looked around quickly, wand cautiously raised. One of Grindelwald’s ‘silos’ of stored and mostly illegal paraphernalia had turned out to also include an acid-spitting two-legged ostrich-sized lizard, whose spit had dissolved, unfortunately, much of said illegal paraphernalia, a desk, several chairs, and Newt’s clothes. The lizard was asleep, bubbling gently beside the stairs, clutching the virulently pink flower bulb that Newt had thrown at it right before he’d been drenched.
“Where’s the other one?”
“No, no, I meant your coat,” Newt explained brightly.

Getting rescued from the sarcophagus that Grindelwald had stashed him in turned out to be a thoroughly uncomfortable affair, if only because Graves suspected that Tina would never let him forget it’d happened, ever. Of all the Aurors who could’ve stumbled over Grindelwald’s vault, did it really have to be her?
Besides, Grindelwald hadn’t had that much time to make Graves’ said sarcophagus stay anything more than humiliating, unless his Grand Plan was to see how long Graves would take to die of boredom. Thankfully, Tina had found Graves before he’d gotten tired of grimly plotting Grindelwald’s murder. Unsettlingly enough, by all reports, Grindelwald had actually been credible enough at Graves’ soul-sucking time sink of a normal job that not even Graves’ closest minions had figured him out. Which meant that a) small wonder Grindewald hadn’t progressed his Plans of World Domination(?) further than aggressively stalking some poor kid and b) Graves clearly needed new minions.

“I’m putting a team together,” said the past, squeezed onto a plastic chair in the kitchen that Goodnight had never bothered to finish assembling. Dusty boxes still squatted beside empty cabinets, full of spiderwebs and rusting pots. Goodnight located a clean cup behind a box of cereal, and another still racked in the dishwasher. Then he took a deep breath, and sat himself down at the table.
Major Chisolm looked good, at least. He was buttoned up in one of the black shirts that he always favoured, silver cufflinks keeping the sleeves neatly in place. He’d hung up his felt hat by the door, and as such, seemed a touch unfinished. Older, yet familiar. Chisolm smiled, teeth bared, in the way he got whenever he was nervy about something.
“A team?” Goodnight said finally, when Chisolm didn’t elaborate.
“Hoping you’d come.” Chisolm pressed. “Pays well.”
