Summary
Six months ago, Steve set out on a final mission to return the infinity stones to their proper timelines, and returned a minute later having lived out a life of peace and contentment with Peggy Carter in the past. He died in his sleep a few days later, surrounded by his friends. Or so Bucky assumes. He wouldn't know, he'd been busy being locked up on the Raft while the government decided whether or not to pardon him for the whole Winter Soldier thing.
What with the court-mandated therapy and the constant surveillance by alphabet agencies and the crushing weight of his past, he's not sure if giving him a chance at "normal life" is more cruel than the alternative. But he's doing fine. Great, actually, so don't ask. He didn't have a nightmare. Especially not that strangely disturbing one about Steve...

The rodent in her hand squeaked indignantly. “So why don’t you leave here with me, and maybe we find you some clothes, and, like, a clif bar or something, because you still look sort of woozy. And then you can think about killing yourself in a way where I’m not the one pressing a button. Okay?”
She smiled at him in an attempt at comfort, straightening her posture to give herself some authority, or at least an air of confidence. He looked at her, and then the bomb, and then the guinea pig, and then behind him to the shadows on the wall. And then back to her.
“Okay,” he echoed, and she was pretty sure he had a bit less doom-and-gloom nothing-matters dejection in his expression now, so maybe she said something kind of right. Maybe.
“Great. How do you feel about wearing dead people shoes? The options here are slim.”

Brock Rumlow blinked, caught off guard from where he was standing in the middle of Steve’s doorway. He was looking at Bucky like he was seeing a ghost.
Steve was oblivious. “Bucky, this is Brock. He works with me at SHIELD. Brock… I assume you know who he is.”
Bucky grinned sharklike from his place at the kitchen table. He even went as far as to wave his metal fingers at Brock. He hoped the violence playing out in his mind wasn’t as visible to Steve as it was to Brock.
“You’re… Bucky Barnes.”

Much later Brock Rumlow sat in his chair in his crappy SHIELD apartment and wanted to scream.
Steve Rogers introducing them to each other, what a laugh. As if Brock didn’t know.
He was hit with a thought. Steve Rogers didn’t know who was in his apartment. Cause that certainly was not his old pal, his buddy, his Bucky.
That was the Winter Soldier playing house.

‘Well, isn’t this just great.’ Bucky thought, flames licking at his skin as he made a sprint for an exit, any exit. But, of course, as his everlasting luck would have it, the fire was all encompassing and had already overtaken the doors.
‘Fuck.’
Sure, he could have done a few things differently. Maybe crossed some T’s and dotted a few I’s a bit sooner than he had, or, you know, spoken more than two words to Sam and kept him in the loop for once. Instead of doing what he always did, which was shot gunning himself into trouble, again.
Fuck, Sam.
**Bucky and Sam must work together to figure out why Hydra is suddenly gunning for the New Captain America. Is everything what it seems? Or is there something more dangerous at play?
