It was Hollander’s absence that had created this void. It wasn’t that Ilya had even cared, before. A quick thrill, that both knew would end. But then, Hollander had hijacked Ilya’s life, refashioned it in his own image, shaped it to fit the empty space he left in his wake. It was terribly cruel, the immeasurable impact that human beings could have on one another. Even more cruel, to walk away from the mess you had created, as Hollander had. At least have the decency to make it mean something.
After a nervous collapse, Shane Hollander returns home to the Foothills of Alberta, only to be brought back into contact with the man he left behind, six years prior.

Summary
It’s dark, and Ilya’s not quite sure where he is.
His entire body is numb. His shoes are soaking wet from trudging lazily through the snow. His nose is running, and his lips are chapped.
Selfishly, he wishes Shane would fuss over him now. Pull him close, whisper “I forgive you” even though he shouldn’t, because Ilya would never change, because something inside him- in his family line, in his soul- was broken.
Ilya wondered how long ago it had clicked- when Shane had realized that Ilya wormed his way into this country and tricked the Hollanders into caring for him, then returned the favor by botching their language and leaving a trail of mess in his wake. He still can't help but wonder if that will be part of his punishment- being doomed to miss him in death, too.
or: Ilya’s mostly been able to cope with the fact that he’ll never be able to articulate himself fully in this country- but he’s also never been good at talking about feelings in the first place.
"I'm tired" is the best he's got. It definitely doesn't capture what's going on in his head, and Shane can't read minds.

Just then something sharp and cool and likely metal has been set lightly against the back of her neck and a voice she knows almost as well as her own commands, “Don’t move.”
Lucy cannot see who stands behind her, but she doesn’t need to. She knows, though she can hardly believe it; stands frozen in shock as the others wheel round, reaching for weapons before they stumble to dumbfounded halts. Caspian is open-mouthed. Lucy is grinning.
Edmund says, wonderingly, “Susan?”

Summary
At school, James and Lily pretend not to know each other. James is wealthy, popular and the star of his school’s football team, while Lily wears second-hand school uniforms, is the school pariah and resented for her smarts. At James’ house, however – meeting there due to Lily’s mother’s housekeeping job – they form an intense connection they desperately try to conceal to the outside world.
A year later, James and Lily both attend Hogwarts University where James has found his feet and made friends he had longed for his entire life, while Lily remains uncertain and haunted by her problematic past.
Throughout their years at university, James and Lily circle each other, trying to resist the magnetic pull between them, whilst coming to the realisation that the both of them may be more religious than they ever thought they were.

James Potter is stressed, but he’s managing.
The restaurant that he co-owns with his childhood best friend, Peter, has just celebrated its one year anniversary and the reviews are good (although, James thinks they could be better). He’s just about on good terms with his ex-girlfriend, too, who, eight months prior, broke up with him and moved to a different country in the span of a week. And his other best friend, Sirius, is pretending not to be a nervous wreck over the concept of doing long distance now that his boyfriend is attending grad school in Scotland, but James is doing what he can to comfort (and occasionally talk some sense into) him.
So, yeah, a lot is going on, but James definitely has it all covered. Or, at least, he did.
Because Regulus Black has just shown up on his doorstep, asking for a pretty massive favor. No apology, no acknowledgement of what happened between them all those years ago, just a request. What could possibly go wrong?

At some point he falls asleep, maybe. He thinks he dreams and that’s bad too. He remembers people talking and feeling the weight of their disappointment. Maybe that wasn’t a dream after all.
Either way, James continues to cry. He was right, earlier. This is utterly unbearable to go through alone.
“Oh, my love,” he hears from the doorway. And Regulus is there—he’s not alone. James doesn’t lift his head or move in any way, but Regulus comes to him, crouching down stroking his hair. and it’s like a gasp of air after being on the verge of drowning. Regulus is here.
