The first thing that registers is the nagging feeling that he is missing something. Something vital, something huge, something outside of immediate sensation (the ground, cool on his back; the white veil of sunlight through his eyelids; the smell of the river mingling with something coppery and hot; the sound of someone saying a name through a thick throat), something… just beyond his reach. He opens his eyes, mouth pulling up in a snarl against how bright it is, lifts a hand to shield himself from the glare of daylight and sees his fingers. They are crusted with blood - the source of that hot metallic scent -, dirt under his nails and smeared up his arms. That voice is just on the horizon of his understanding. Like the weight of mountains rests on his head; everything muffled, ears ringing in a stark vibrato which shudders through his skull.
