Death is angry.
Ares can sense it even from across the battlefield, the red, boiling fury he knows better than any other. It is the desire for violence, the drive to fight, the will to harm. A selfish anger. An anger he is so very familiar with, for it is the anger that coaxes kings into conflict, compels soldiers into battle, feeds strife until it is ripe for picking. It is the anger that fuels wars.
But he has never, in all his existence, felt that anger radiating from Death Incarnate.
Ares revels in this anger, in what it represents. But it ill suits Thanatos, he who grants peace to those felled by that very anger, and such as it is the first time Ares has felt this anger radiating from the God of Death, so is it the first time the God of War takes no pleasure from the sensation.

Thanatos closes his eyes, breathes deeply, sets his shoulders. “I am Death,” he declares, “and Death only ever takes. If I begin, I am not likely to stop. Are you truly prepared for that?”
Ares isn’t entirely sure what compels him – if it is the intensity of Thanatos’ gaze, or the weight of his words, or the simple fact that his own legs seem incapable of supporting him any longer – but he falls to his knees before Death, head bowed in deference. In reverence. “Yes.”

Summary
At the dawn of their divinity, young gods knew nothing but freedom. Zagreus burned as bright as a newborn star with it, almost unnaturally so, even for a god. It was Zagreus who devised their games, who weaved their stories, and who drew out Thanatos’ laugher from a place within himself Thanatos barely understood. Zagreus never asked for anything in return, only his companionship. Thanatos gave it without thought. He would have basked in that light for eternity if he could.
Thanatos forgot none of it. Not a single touch or word had slipped from his mind. He could work himself to exhaustion, he could shield his heart with indignation and resentment. Yet his feelings for Zagreus remained. He still missed him, still needed him, still answered his every beck and call. And now, Thanatos knew he would answer him again.

“I don’t think I’ve heard this one before,” Zag mutters, trying to place the lyrics.
“It is the Lament of Orpheus. He has not sung this particular one in much time. The last time I heard was from my own son, instead.”
“Hypnos can sing?” Zag asks, surprised. He can’t imagine the high voice of Sleep singing such a tune, though the God was full of surprises.
“No,” Nyx corrects, “Thanatos.”

Zagreus hears a rumor than Thanatos can sing and becomes determined to experience it for himself.

Returning to the world meant facing what he left behind.
Red participates in the Pokemon World Tournament to battle and nothing more, despite Giovanni's presence being an unwelcome distraction. He thinks of snowy peaks without lights and cameras glaring his way, where he could do what he wanted without the public's eye weighing him down with ancient expectations.
It's enough to juggle the League's demands of him, tolerate that man's appearance as a participating Leader, and manage the fragile state of his relationship with Green all at once, without giving into the temptation to sail away from it all.
