    Summary

Just as he thinks the path to his damn console is clear, a piercing snicker shoots up his spine.
And yeah, just like that, Narumi's day goes from bad to fucking hellish.
He would recognise that jarring sound anywhere, and true to his suspicion, he finds a certain bowl-shaped figure leaning against his doorframe.
“My, my, Captain Narumi,” Hoshina starts in his stupid Kansai dialect, “aren't you a little behind on schedule?”

In which the JAKDF hold a party to celebrate the victory of the tragic battle with Kaiju no.9, and Narumi Gen finds himself waking up to his least favourite colleague sleeping soundly besides him.

“I don't care for my own death, if it is for the good of humanity then so be it– but I did not want to die without being honest with you. I couldn't bear the idea of not giving this a chance, selfish as it may be, but now–” his fingers squeeze gently, “knowing that you feel the same, I–”
“You like me,” Narumi cuts him off. “You… have feelings for me?”
“I have liked you since the day you so flamboyantly demanded I join your division,” he quietly admits, “I have liked you since you scowled at me for beating you at small Kaiju eliminations, I have liked you since you laughed in my face when you finally beat my highscore. When you put on that stupid maid dress all to one up me in a silly bet. When you fought to the near death next to me, also willing to give your life away if it meant saving others.”

    Summary

“And what’s in it for me?” Narumi finally asks, almost a lazy drawl.

Gritting his teeth, Hoshina says, “They’re willing to offer anything within reason.”

Anything?” Narumi looks wide-eyed and innocent, like a small child receiving their first present. It must be a trick of the light because when he blinks, a familiar, cocksure smile has slid into place.

With resources stretched thin and the increasing number of kaiju attacks, Hoshina Soshiro has been tasked with finding and bringing back one Narumi Gen—the delinquent kicked out of the Defense Force years ago. Hoshina quickly finds himself dealing with more than one kind of trouble.

Because if he loses Hoshina, it would be like losing everything.

Because if he stops loving Hoshina, it would be like feeling nothing at all.

    So, he chooses silence.

In silence, Narumi can hold onto the illusion of having something.

    Someone.

Hoshina supposes he hasn’t noticed it, but—their relationship has been in limbo for some time now.

They’re not close, different divisions, different responsibilities, different positions. In fact, Hoshina has probably fought Narumi more times than he’s fought with him. But they’re not not close, either.

Their relationship has been in limbo for quite some time now. But this limbo isn’t stagnant. It’s not an ocean of darkness but not pure white, either. It might not have a fixed color at all. But it’s not bad. Hoshina finds he doesn’t mind it. It’s not bad at all.

Hoshina fears he’s tripped over the line and crashed into a mountaintop boulder and started the beginning of the demolition of the finely balanced limbo they’ve spent so long creating.
    --
Narumi snickers and punches him in the arm. He adds to his physical shut up with a light shove that’s easily canceled out by the mesmerizing grin he wears, and for a moment, Hoshina is defenseless in the face of the pink glow.
    --
“Anyway, you’re wrong about the last part too. Subordinate is boring, I have enough subordinates already, lame,” he shakes his head. “I wanted you as my Vice-Commander, ‘Shina. As my counterpart.”
    --
“I don’t know, okay, just—like—nobody else looks at me. Like that, I mean. The way you’re looking at me.”

It’s not an answer to his question at all, Hoshina notes with mirth. He hums. He can think of plenty of people—fans, cadets, name it—who look at Narumi with something akin to wanting. Narumi just generally doesn’t care enough about that kind of attention from ‘nobodies’ to notice that it even exists. Hoshina says as much, “Nah. I just don’t think you pay attention to nobody else most of the time.”

“And what’s that supposed to mean?”

Hoshina laughs, oddly endeared by the sincere puzzlement lacing Narumi’s features. “For all that ego, you’re not very quick on the uptake.”

Narumi’s eyebrows furrow as he prepares to fire back defensively at the unprompted insult. Luckily, Hoshina anticipates it and beats him to the jump, “I’m tellin’ you that you’re pretty, Gen.”
