The artificial glow of the station departure boards and the numbers on her phone are one minute apart, caught in the space between 6:48 and 6:49 PM. It’s the tail end of autumn. The days are getting colder. She wraps her scarf tighter around herself, slips into a seat as the compartment doors slide noiselessly shut behind her. Outside, the city lights blur as they zip past, and she releases a sigh, allows herself that much.

She’s Lydia’s friend too now, like really, and so Lydia rearranges the carrots into nothing and tries to think of something to say.
