Summary
Dean Winchester was raised to be a killer, but after losing his brother Sam, he could do with a chance to lay low and rest up.
Luckily, a 'roommate wanted' advertisement stuck to the window of a coffee shop leads him to Castiel, a professor at a local college who offers him three weeks' accommodation.
At first, Castiel gets under Dean's skin, but they soon develop a friendship within the isolated house they're living in. Despite how haunted he is by his past, or how Castiel seems able to read his mind, Dean feels drawn to him and can't help but take things further.
But Dean isn't the only one with secrets, and the line between friendship, love, and obsession gets bloody and blurry.

And Dean has been different since his rescue, has thrown out all boundaries he’d ever said were customary. Humans always manage to surprise Castiel. Dean surprises him most of all.

it's 1996, it's the arizona desert and it's hot. The Winchesters are leaving town tomorrow, and everyone in this shitty motel knows about it. Dean shares cigarettes that aren't his, Sam shares some secrets that aren't his either. John doesn't share his whisky. Overall, they've probably all had better nights.
A Bush era title for a Clinton era fic.

And then he felt like crying. Like a failure of a man, like a failure of a father.
"Safety's here," John said, thumbing the switch with deliberate movement. "You left it off."
Dean blinked up at him, green eyes wet.
John ejected the empty magazine. The metallic click echoed between them. He pulled a fresh one from his jacket pocket, slapped it home with practiced ease.
