“Okay, all right, well, I think we’re done here,” Eddie sighs, but when he glances into the rear-view mirror, he sees a smile on his face, and his cheeks are flushed. He frowns as something occurs to him. “Wait, are we? What did you call me for?”
“You called me, Eduardo.”
“I called you back, idiot!”
“Yeah, yeah. I dunno, man,” Richie says easily enough. Eddie can hear his fingers rattling against some hard surface as he talks, restlessly drumming as he speaks. “I saw Stan, and suddenly I realised that I fucking missed him, and then hot on the tails of that I was like… man, do I miss Eddie, jeez! So I called. That’s all. No biggie.”
“Oh,” Eddie breathes, and does not try to stop the pleased smile blooms with Richie’s words. “I, uh. I miss you too, jackass. God only knows why, but I do.”
Richie groans happily. “Man, that’s the stuff! Nobody insults me like you do, Eds.”
“Nobody deserves it like you,” Eddie grins, and Richie bursts into laughter. Eddie’s soul soars at the sound of it.

Summary
Contrary to anyone who he’s told the story to (just Stan and Bev so far, really), Richie didn’t actually feel anything for Eddie once he saw him again at the Jade of the Orient. There weren’t alarms sounding off in his head, no butterflies raging in his stomach, no feeling of free-falling into a cliff he didn’t plan to jump over. Instead, Richie stayed behind the railing, looking over the depth of the feelings he was acutely aware his teenage self felt over his best friend, and almost didn’t feel anything at all.
Everything was going well, terrifying eldritch monster and hospital visits aside, until four months after Derry 2.0 when Richie watched as Eddie checked the clothes tag of a shirt while they were shopping at a thrift store, felt the familiar tug of weight in his chest like an old friend unwelcome, and thought, oh. There it is.
So he does what he’s never done before: he makes a list.

There’s not always an audience to perform for," and at the time he’d laughed it off, of course, rolled his eyes, What a groundbreaking observation, a comedian seeking validation, but sometimes when he’s alone it creeps up on him: Are you performing right now? Who are you performing for? Are you performing right now?
“I go to therapy now,” he blurts out.
Eddie looks up from his phone, clearly surprised.
“Oh.” He nods, blurry in the corner of Richie's eye. “Me too.”
“Dope,” Richie says, popping the p hard. The conversation halts.

Over the tannoy, an announcement. Something about a gate change for a Delta Airline flight. Nothing important. Pulled out of this moment of pure focus, Eddie falters and loses any semblance of the bravery Richie so passionately ascribed him in the sewers.
He stabs the cuttlefish with one chopstick and shoves it into his mouth.
Maybe he should have written Richie a fucking letter. It would have been easy enough to slip that into his jacket pocket when he isn't looking, or at least easier than having to look him in the eyes over plates of sushi and say, Hey, bro, I'm in love with you.
He probably shouldn't call him bro while he says it.
"Nothing," he says, feeling like an idiot. "Never mind."

“Aw, shucks, you’d really do all that for little ol’ me?” Richie fawns in his best-worst Southern Belle voice.
Eddie is offscreen washing his hands in the kitchen sink when he says “Yeah, dumbass, I have disposable income, and the office can cope without me for like two and a half days.”
“You’re serious?” Richie asks quietly, a little overcome.
“Yeah, man,” Eddie says, stepping back into frame. “Only if you want me to, though, I mean—” His eyebrows come in for a worried landing over his eyes, as they often do, and Richie loves them when they do that but he does not want to miss out on the opportunity to have Eddie in his house instead of on his grainy cell phone screen.
“No, I want you to!” Richie says frantically. “I insist, Eduardo. Come to California.”
Eddie’s smile pops up, just briefly, a flash of white pixels as he looks down at his hands. “Okay,” he says.

“No,” Ben admits. He takes a few steps toward Richie, like he hopes fleeing the scene will dispel the momentary awkwardness. “It’s just…”
“I would’ve guessed you mostly do prepackaged stuff,” Mike adds, following Ben’s lead with an apologetic smile of his own. Eddie does, too, except he also stuffs his hands into his pockets and hunches in on himself just enough to attract Richie’s attention, which is why he inadvertently directs most of his retort at him.

Every time Eddie laughs, Richie looks pleased with himself. And it’s pretty often. Richie’s good. He takes direction well and doesn’t flub the lines. But there’s a problem: he likes to improvise.
Eddie hates comedians who improvise all over the written script. None of them are as good as the writers are. It’s attention-seeking and desperate.
“Hey, Nathan Lane,” he calls out, “stop with the improv. Freestyle at home.” Mike lightly punches Eddie in the shoulder.
“Mike, get him out of here, he’s interfering with my process,” Richie says in his best diva voice. He doesn’t seem offended, which is good, because Eddie was afraid he’d crossed a line as soon as he’d said it. They were friendly but probably not at the fake insult level of friendship yet. Still, Eddie calls out again.
“You’re not Robin Williams in Aladdin. No one’s as good as Robin Williams in Aladdin. Give it up.”**
AU: Eddie is an animator and Richie is an up-and-coming comedian who voices the character in a movie he’s working on. They fall in love.
